The roof of this Upper West Side water tank was removed earlier today, destroying an active nest of the well-known Barn Owl family that lived there, despite federal and state laws protecting such nests. The DEC is on site to investigate.

“The easiest thing for a political leader to do is to appeal to our bigotry and our hatred and xenophobia and prejudice, and point to people who are unlike us and say they’re the ones who are damaging our country," Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., August 5, 2016 on Larry King Now. There was a time when I completely agreed with my brother. Today, I am deeply ashamed of him. Arab and Muslim people alike have made extraordinary contributions to the world across literature, science, mathematics, medicine and countless other fields. To name a few, Omar M. Yaghi won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 2018 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2025. Ahmed Zewail won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999, and Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. A person’s race, religion, ethnicity or socioeconomic background does not determine their intellect, creativity or capacity to contribute to humanity. My thoughts are with all those hurt by my brother’s false, cruel and derogatory words. nytimes.com/2026/10/27/us/rf…

‘Minute’ comes from the Late Latin ‘minuta,’ referring to 1/60 of a unit, such as an hour. A minute is the first division of the hour. The second division of an hour is called...a 'second.'

Taken September 23, 2015 at The White House. Mum loved to add clever lines and thought bubbles to photos. She prominently displayed this photo of herself with Pope Francis and President Barack Obama. She added a thought bubble above the Pope’s head that read, “Lord, please make her let go.” The bubble coming out of Obama’s mouth said, “That’s enough, Ethel.” 🔗 ETHEL KENNEDY releases October 13. The grammatical 'colon' and the anatomical 'colon' are not etymologically related. The anatomical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kolon’ which means “large intestine.” The grammatical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kōlon’ which means “limb.” Both are a means to an end.

Russia's five-hospital quarantine, FSB involvement, and reported hazmat use in response to the death of a single researcher at a weapons-lineage Irkutsk lab are inconsistent with a lab-acquired plague infection, which would have been treated with prophylactic antibiotics. 1/4

Many of you have been tracking the Irkutsk lab situation over the last few days. I've been gathering facts and trying to understand what is happening before weighing in. Now that I have, I have to say — I'm concerned 🧵

A student just told me, "I like your teaching style. You don't make people feel stupid." It sounds corny, but that is a huge part of my classroom philosophy. Yes, we must maintain academic rigor, but intimidated students will not contribute, and no good can come from that. (1/2)

More writing output never did mean more knowledge gained. We knew that. And yet we continued to act like it did. This isn't AIs fault. It's science's.

UNC just inherited a great collection. Will it build a great program? My op-ed in today's @newsobserver on the Duke–UNC herbarium transfer. The collection is safe. What happens next depends on how many curators and faculty UNC hires — and when. yahoo.com/news/science/artic…

30 years ago, 50% of Americans lived in an area where the heat index exceeded 90 degrees for an average of 25+ days annually. That number has since climbed to 70%. Summer is losing its fun, and will only get more unbearable if we don't act. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a 10-page memo signaling a retreat from its traditional role of giving grants to individual researchers to pursue their best ideas and to train the next generation of scientists. Instead, the memo makes clear, NSF will devote the bulk of its resources to addressing the research priorities of President Donald Trump and his administration, many of them technology focused. scim.ag/4ipE1kY
