#ThePoliticsofLanguage.
As African people we should stick together to make Europin languages, the languages of colonial dominance, the languages of slavery and exploitation, work for us...or not work. We should make them undominant.

The inauguration of the proposed Dangote refinery in Lamu has brought big promises of investment, jobs, business opportunities and economic growth. For many Kenyans, this sounds like an opportunity worth paying attention to. But beyond the excitement and the headlines, there is a simple question that matters: what exactly has Kenya agreed to?
Behind a project of this size are agreements that define the responsibilities, commitments and obligations of both the government and the investor. These agreements can also determine what communities stand to gain and what protections are in place for their land, livelihoods, environment and cultural heritage.
This is why the contract and commitment agreement should be made public. Kenyans should not have to rely on speeches, press statements or promises to understand a project being presented as a major national investment. The people of Lamu, who live closest to the project and whose lives may be directly affected, have an even greater stake in knowing what has been agreed.
Making the agreements public is not being against development or investment. It is about ensuring that development happens with transparency, public participation and accountability. When public resources, public institutions and community interests are involved, citizens have a right to understand the commitments being made.
The question is therefore straightforward: If this project is in the public interest, why shouldn't the public see the deal?
Let Kenyans read the contract. Let the people of Lamu see the commitments. Let the public understand what has been agreed, what has been promised and who will be responsible for delivering on those promises.
Development should not only be measured by the size of the investment. It should also be measured by how openly the deal is made and how well it protects the people it is meant to benefit.

Walichukua Mkopo, Sisi Tunalipa.
When the debt grows, the mwananchi feels it-in the price of fuel, the cost of food, the taxes we pay, and the public services we depend on.
But how much do we really know about the loans taken in our name, how they are spent, and who bears the cost of repayment?
Join us for two days of public debt awareness, reflection, and action as we connect Kenya’s borrowing decisions to everyday realities and demand transparency, accountability, and responsible use of public resources.
📌Day 1: Awareness & Reflection
📌 Day 2: Recommendations & Action. Because public debt is not just a matter of figures. It is about our livelihoods, our future, and our right to know. Walichukua Mkopo, Sisi Tunalipa. Wanakopa, Tunalipa.

Did you know Kenya's public debt has nearly doubled in under five years from Ksh 7.7 trillion in 2021 to over Ksh 13 trillion today? Where do you think that money went?#WanakopaTunalipa

Kenya's debt has nearly doubled in under five years. 🇰🇪
In mid-2021, our public debt stood at about Ksh 7.7 trillion. By mid-2026, it has passed Ksh 13 trillion, with debt-to-GDP at roughly 69–71%, well above the 55% anchor we are legally meant to reach by 2028. But the real story is what it costs the mwananchi. In FY2024/25, about Ksh 1.72 trillion went to debt servicing, roughly 69% of ordinary tax revenue. For every Ksh 100 collected in taxes, close to Ksh 70 goes to lenders, not to schools, hospitals, roads, or social protection.
We have felt it in the housing levy, the fuel prices, the VAT changes, and the rising cost of living. In June 2024, Kenyans took to the streets to say the link between borrowing and taxes had become unbearable. That is why we are holding a two-day campaign to close the gap between decisions made in Nairobi's boardrooms and life at the market stall, the boda boda stage, the classroom, and the farm.
📌 Day 1: Awareness & Reflection. What do we owe, to whom, and what has it meant for our pockets and our services?
📌 Day 2: Recommendation & Action. From calls on paper to concrete steps by government and by us as citizens.
Join us. The mwananchi deserves to know, and to be heard. #WanakopaTunalipa

🧘 As the afternoon wound down, we came back together for yoga ,mats out, phones away, nothing left to prove. After all the movement and laughter and noise, this was the quiet exhale the day had been building toward. Just breath, stillness, and everyone fully in their bodies for a moment.
🌳 And with that, Wellness Wednesday has officially wrapped. From stretching to Zumba, painting to cards, nature walks to yoga , today wasn't about the activities themselves, but about giving our people permission to pause. Grateful for everyone who showed up, let their guard down, and made today what it was. Here's to doing this again soon. #EAWellness
