David Fincher ultimately made the right decision not directing The Social Reckoning, a film that doesn’t compare to The Social Network. My biggest issue with The Social Reckoning (a film I still like) is there doesn’t really feel like a story exists to base a film around. With The Social Network, we’re seeing the inception/groundwork around how Facebook was created & the battle around its ownership. There’s urgency - the narrative has a destination.
With The Social Reckoning, however, the story basically reiterates for two hours that Facebook has radicalized America: we all hate each other so much because of social media. I think it’s a worthy premise to base a film upon, but there’s no real story beyond that narrative, making it a hollow story/forgettable movie. I think Fincher - who’s undeniably a genius - saw that issue from a few miles away & decided to bounce.
Revisiting The Social Network after seeing The Social Reckoning, it’s like the two films exist in totally different universes.
