My comment on recent market volatility @AdaniOnline Mood is ephemeral; stone is eternal. While the crowd reacts to ticker noise, our infrastructure continues to weigh heavy and true. In the end, substance always outlasts speculation. Look at the assets, not at the hyperventilating speculators. Happy, healthy and prosperous Dussehra and Diwali to all.

I took this picture at Ahmedabad airport. If you zoom in, you'll see two kiosks for issuing boarding passes, you'll see only one airline listed there - Indigo. If you zoom into the screen next to it, you'll see a list of flights, each one of them is by Indigo. On left is a board of Adani, at the bottom of the screen is an advertisement of Reliance Jio claiming that it is enabling Digital Ahmedabad. On the right is a cafe, by Adani. Welcome to monopolised India.

The 2014 vs 2026 India Market Cap Leaderboard 🇮🇳A historic 12-year cycle of wealth creation. Here is how the heavyweights rank purely by Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from May 2014 to August 2026 (Market Cap in Lakh Crores): 1/ ⚡ Bajaj Finance: ₹0.17L Cr ➡️ ₹6.81L Cr (35.16% CAGR) 2/ 🐊 Adani Group: ₹1.22L Cr ➡️ ₹20.00L Cr (25.65% CAGR) 3/ 🔶 ICICI Bank: ₹1.70L Cr ➡️ ₹10.00L Cr (15.56% CAGR) 4/ 🏦 SBI Group: ₹2.33L Cr ➡️ ₹13.19L Cr (15.20% CAGR) 5/ 🔷 HDFC Bank: ₹2.07L Cr ➡️ ₹11.26L Cr (14.83% CAGR) 6/ 🦅 Reliance (RIL): ₹3.60L Cr ➡️ ₹17.80L Cr (13.94% CAGR) 7/ 📊 BSE PSU Index: ₹19.10L Cr ➡️ ₹64.46L Cr (10.44% CAGR) 💡 Key Takeaway: While Bajaj Finance and Adani Group dominated structural growth rates, listing hidden subsidiaries (Life, Cards, AMC) allowed the unified SBI Group to outpace the overall PSU index and directly challenge top-tier private banks.

A strange paper by Grier & Grier (2025) (link attached end of my response) A Methodological and Econometric Critique of Grier and Grier (2025) I will demonstrate that the authors' conclusions regarding a 10% output gap and governance deficit are artifacts of severe methodological flaws: 1) These include extreme interpolation bias due to an unrepresentative donor pool, 2) subjective optimization of the predictor weights ($ V$-matrix), and 3) A failure to reconcile unadjusted structural breaks in India's national accounting framework (the 2015 base-year revision). Furthermore, that the Stable Unit Treatment Value Assumption (SUTVA) is violated due to global macroeconomic spillovers from India’s digital and physical infrastructure expansion. Consequently, the counterfactual path generated is statistically fragile ( including foundational error of not accounting for a structural break in the series), highly sensitive to minor modifications in the donor pool, and structurally invalid for policy inference. The Methodological Framework in Grier & Grier 2025 The Synthetic Control Method (SCM), popularized by Abadie et al. (2003, 2010), has become a foundational tool for comparative case studies in empirical macroeconomics. By constructing a weighted combination of unaffected units (the donor pool), SCM attempts to simulate a counterfactual trajectory for a treated unit (In this case India) in the absence of an intervention. The validity of the SCM estimator rests entirely on the assumption that the target unit lies within the convex hull of the donor pool across all relevant structural predictors. [Formally, let $ X_1$ be the vector of pre-intervention characteristics for the treated unit (India), and $ X_0$ be the matrix of the same characteristics for the $ J$ control units in the donor pool. SCM minimizes the discrepancy vector $(X_1 - X_0W)'V(X_1 - X_0W)$, subject to the constraints that the weights are non-negative ($ w_j \ge 0$) and sum to unity ($\sum w_j = 1$)]. When applied to a highly complex, continent-sized economy like India (which behaves as a trade block), the mathematical constraints of SCM undergo severe breakdown. The individual flaws in this paper ( quite strange use of language for a science paper) deconstructs the statistical foundation of Grier and Grier (2025) across five pillars of econometric vulnerability. Extrapolation and Interpolation Bias in the Donor Pool The fundamental axiom of SCM requires that the synthetic counterfactual represents a close convex combination of donor countries with similar structural characteristics. Grier and Grier (2025) violate this principle by introducing a highly heterogeneous donor pool to model an idiosyncratic, extreme unit. Formally – in 3 steps – A creation of a mathematical phantom to achieve a political objective The Micro-Unit Scaling Problem: Because India is a massive, diversified economy with specific demographic and structural dynamics, it frequently sits as an outlier on the boundary of the donor pool's data space. When the algorithm is forced to minimize pre-treatment MSPE (Mean Squared Prediction Error) for an extreme unit, it triggers a "corner solution." Artificial Interpolation: The optimization mechanism resolves this by assigning disproportionate weights to a small number of economically non-comparable donor countries (e.g., take out Ethiopia and the problems becomes worse). Combining these disparate units to approximate India creates an entirely artificial baseline. Lack of Convexity: The resulting "Synthetic India" is a mathematical phantom that mimics the pre-2014 trend line through linear interpolation of unrelated economic shocks, rather than representing a structurally resilient counterfactual. Subjectivity and Endogeneity in -Matrix Optimization The choice of the predictor weight matrix = \text{diag}(v_1, v_2, \dots, v_k)$ introduces a critical dimension of researcher degrees of freedom that is inadequately addressed in the paper. The matrix used dictates the relative importance assigned to different pre-treatment covariates when determining the country weights. Data-Mining Vulnerability: Grier and Grier (2025), the objective function used to determine in which the-matrix is heavily weighted toward subjective, perception-based governance indices (that themselves carry error margin). By prioritizing soft institutional variables over hard macroeconomic fundamentals (such as gross fixed capital formation, demographic dependency ratios, and industrial production indices), the optimization routine inherently skews the selection of donor units. Omitted Variable Bias (OVB): The authors fail to adequately penalize the inclusion of subjective indices that are themselves prone to measurement errors and time-varying reporting biases ( sudden unexplained drop in V Dem indicators of India post 2014). Specifying a -matrix that favors these indicators ensures that the synthetic counterfactual tracks an artificially inflated growth path, rendering the post-treatment divergence a foregone conclusion( ie the answer was a foregone conclusion and no paper was needed)of the initial variable selection rather than an empirical discovery. 4. Unadjusted Structural Breaks in National Accounts A foundational requirement for time-series and panel data inference is that data-generating processes remain methodologically consistent across the pre- and post-intervention horizons. Grier and Grier (2025) fail to account for the massive structural break in India's national accounting framework introduced in January 2015 ( Read 3 above. Result was a foregone conclusion and not a unbiased outcome). [Pre-2014 Baseline] [Post-2014 Horizon] --------------------------- --------------------------- • Base Year: 2004-05 • Metric: Factor Cost • Data Source: ASI & Sample Surveys • Base Year: 2011-12 • Metric: Market Prices (GVA) • Data Source: MCA-21 Database Formally: The 2015 Base-Year Shift:** The Central Statistics Office (CSO) shifted the base year from 2004–05 to 2011–12, transitioning from GDP at factor cost to GDP at market prices (Gross Value Added/GVA) and integrating the comprehensive MCA-21 corporate database. This regulatory update fundamentally altered how the informal sector, manufacturing value-add, and service-sector growth are captured. Mismatched Baselines: Because the donor countries in the paper's pool did not undergo a simultaneous, identical overhaul in their statistical data collection architectures, the post-2014 data for India is scale-incommensurate with its own pre-2014 baseline and the donor pool’s continuous time-series. Failing to rigorously back-cast or mathematically harmonize these series induces a severe and fatal measurement error that SCM misattributes as a policy-driven output gap. Violation of the Stable Unit Treatment Value Assumption (SUTVA) The causal identification of the SCM estimator is strictly dependent on the Stable Unit Treatment Value Assumption (SUTVA). This assumption dictates that the intervention or treatment applied to the target country must not exert spillover effects onto the untreated control units within the donor pool. Formally: Macroeconomic Spillovers: India's rapid scale-up of public digital infrastructure (the India Stack, UPI, and unified tax systems) and its massive expansion in global service exports have generated significant international macroeconomic spillovers. General Equilibrium Effects: Changes in India’s trade terms, digital service offshoring capacity, and foreign direct investment patterns directly reshape the growth vectors of other emerging markets in the donor pool. Contamination of the Control Group: When the "treatment" alters the economic trajectories of the control units, SUTVA is violated. If India's growth structurally outpaced or crowded out capital flows from specific donor nations, the control units were directly affected by the treatment, invalidating them as a neutral baseline and rendering the calculated 10% output gap statistically meaningless. Subnational Heterogeneity and Aggregation Bias (India as economic unit behaves as a trade block) By evaluating India exclusively through highly aggregated national indicators, Grier and Grier (2025) commit a profound aggregation bias, treating a highly decentralized, multi-state economy as a single, homogenous unit. The Federal Blindspot: India functions economically more like a continent or a trade bloc than a singular state. Over the post-2014 period, subnational entities exhibited starkly divergent growth paths, driven by varying states of digital adoption, distinct state-level industrial policies, and localized infrastructure investments. Masking Structural Realities: A singular, national-level weight matrix applied via SCM cannot capture these simultaneous, co-existing structural dynamics. By smoothing over this internal variance, the synthetic control fails to isolate whether the observed aggregate variations are driven by systemic nationwide governance changes or merely reflect structural shifts within specific localized sectors. The claim by Grier and Grier (2025) that India experienced a 10% economic underperformance post-2014 is an artifact of methodological fragility rather than empirical reality. The " heavily politicised findings" dissolve under close econometric scrutiny due to extreme 1) interpolation bias, 2) uncorrected data structural breaks, and 3) explicit SUTVA violations. We can establish a statistically robust baseline for Indian economic evaluation, for which a future empirical research must abandon macro-level SCM frameworks in favour of more advanced causal inference designs: 1. Subnational SCM Execution: Construct counterfactuals at the individual state level using localized donor pools to control for subnational heterogeneity and eliminate aggregation bias. 2. Generalized Synthetic Control (GSC): Implement Generalized Synthetic Control models (Xu, 2017) that integrate latent interactive fixed effects, effectively mitigating the rigid convex hull constraints and corner-solution weight allocations. 3. Rigorous Data Harmonization: Fully reconcile the 2015 national accounts structural breaks using chain-linked, fully back-cast GVA series to ensure exact measurement parity between the treated unit and the donor pool.
