#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: On how significantly the waiver of 100% U.S. tariffs under the Lindsey Graham Act will prevent trade shocks and safeguard India's macroeconomic growth, CareEdge Chief Economist Rajani Sinha says, "Up to 100% tariffs that the US had threatened India with, we were not much concerned about it. We viewed that more as a negotiating technique by the US. But definitely, if it has been revoked, it is a comforting development, and it will help India in these turbulent times... we could also see in future, in a few months, you can again see the US threatening with higher tariffs. So this concern is likely to linger..."
She adds, "...India has signed trade agreements with the UK, EU, Australia, UAE. So all those would be supporting factors. Having some trade with US is no doubt a very important trading partner. Around $90 billion of exports go to the US, which is around 20% of our total exports. As far as revoking this particular threat is concerned, I would say it's also in US benefit. US is also looking at its own energy security..."

Watch: CareEdge Ratings Chief Economist Rajani Sinha says, "I would say that the IDBI disinvestment is a landmark reform because the government has been working on it and trying to carry out the disinvestment for the last few years. Finally, it has come through this year. It's good in the sense that it will increase private participation in the banking sector and improve efficiency in the sector. From a macroeconomic perspective, it's also good because it will help the government meet its fiscal deficit target. As we are all aware, this year's disinvestment target was much higher than in the last few years..."
#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: On the extent to which continued access to discounted Russian crude oil helps lower India’s current account deficit and inflation, CareEdge Chief Economist Rajani Sinha says, "Russia has become a very important source of crude oil import for India. Now the share of our crude oil import from Russia has been around more than 30% in the last few years. And four years back, the share was as low as 11%, and before that, it was even lower... The Russian crude oil price is now at around $117 per barrel, whereas available Brent has a spot price of around 120. So, this gap has narrowed. So now India is not benefiting much in terms of getting Russian crude oil at a discounted price. The discount has really reduced significantly. But yes, what is more important for India now is availability and ensuring a consistent supply of crude oil for the economy..."

CareEdge Global’s latest Global Economy Update points to a world where growth remains resilient despite geopolitical disruptions, but inflation, tighter monetary policy, and shifting capital flows continue to reshape sovereign and economic outlooks.
Key highlights:
• The IMF has marginally upgraded its 2026 global growth outlook, supported by resilience in select advanced economies and India.
• The West Asia conflict continues to fuel inflationary pressures, prompting a more hawkish stance from several central banks globally.
• Gold has overtaken US Treasuries as the largest global reserve asset, reflecting sovereign efforts to diversify reserves amid heightened uncertainty.
• India’s capital account surplus is projected to strengthen significantly in FY27, aided by FCNR-related inflows and policy measures.
• Structural reforms remain a key differentiator in sovereign resilience, with implementation quality increasingly influencing credit fundamentals.

South Africa's real GDP contracted by 0.2% Q-o-Q in Q2 2026, reversing six consecutive quarters of expansion. The downturn was driven by weakness in the mining, manufacturing and trade sectors, highlighting the economy's continued vulnerability to sector-specific shocks. While growth is expected to recover in the second half of the year, the renewed contraction has revived concerns about South Africa's structurally weak growth profile, which continues to constrain fiscal consolidation efforts and broader credit fundamentals.

A 20.6% rise in life insurance NBP in H1 FY27 signals healthy momentum, but the underlying drivers deserve closer attention. Growth is increasingly being fueled by group and single-premium segments, reshaping the industry's premium profile.
Key takeaways:
• Group business remains the growth engine, with its share rising to 64.5% of industry premiums in H1 FY27.
• Private insurers continue to outpace LIC, expanding market share in both NBP and APE.
• Single-premium products now account for 70.8% of H1 FY27 premiums, underscoring the industry's reliance on institutional flows.
• Regulatory developments around expenses of management, commissions, bancassurance and distribution remain key monitorables for profitability and growth strategies.
• Growth is likely to stay healthy, though increasing dependence on group business could keep monthly trends volatile.

CareEdge Ratings’ latest BFSI research highlights a quarter-end surge in banking activity, with credit growth continuing to outpace deposit mobilisation, raising important questions around funding costs and liquidity conditions.
Key takeaways:
• Bank credit growth accelerated to 19.4% YoY, while deposit growth stood at 17.8% YoY, widening the credit-deposit growth gap to ~155 bps.
• The loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) edged up to 81.0%, reflecting stronger credit expansion relative to deposits.
• Liquidity surplus has narrowed from early-September peaks, while the RBI’s rate hike and tightening stance could push funding costs higher.
• CD issuance nearly doubled during the fortnight, indicating increased reliance on wholesale funding as banks bridge the credit-deposit gap.
As liquidity conditions evolve and rates move higher, the key watchpoint is whether deposit mobilisation can keep pace with credit demand without materially increasing funding costs.

A 25-bps hike may not be the real story. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s shift to calibrated tightening could matter far more for lenders. By raising the repo rate to 5.50% and moving away from a neutral stance, the RBI has effectively ruled out rate cuts in this cycle. For banks and NBFCs, that means a higher-for-longer environment.
Key takeaways:
Banks: Near-term margin support is likely as loans reprice faster than deposits, but that advantage may fade as funding costs catch up.
NBFCs: The funding mix becomes critical. Institutions dependent on wholesale borrowings may face sharper pressure on spreads.
Asset quality: Resilient for now, but prolonged elevated rates could test highly leveraged borrowers.
The key variables to watch are liquidity conditions, inflation trajectory, and lenders’ pricing power.

India’s non-food credit growth remained robust at 18.8% y-o-y in August 2026, with banks adding nearly ₹35 lakh crore over the past year. The expansion continues to be broad-based, though the drivers are evolving.
Key takeaways:
• Services led growth at 24.3%, driven primarily by strong bank lending to NBFCs, highlighting a shift in funding preferences.
• Industrial credit remained healthy at 18.2%, with medium industries outpacing large borrowers, reflecting sustained capex and MSME demand.
• Personal loans grew 16.9%, supported by vehicle finance and gold loans, although gold loan growth continued to moderate from elevated levels.
• Agricultural credit accelerated to 17.2%, indicating broader participation in the credit cycle.

Key Insights:
A one-off boost to deposits: FCNR(B) mobilised USD 133 billion, about 77% of FY27 deposit accretion through August. We estimate FY27 deposit growth at 13.5%-14.5%, with FCNR(B) adding approximately 480 bps.
Credit deployment will be gradual: Majority of the pool mobilised by PSU and private banks could support fresh credit, with the balance used for liquidity buffers and retiring wholesale funding.
Margins: NIMs may be mildly dilutive in Q2FY27 as funds are first held in liquid assets or used to repay short term liabilities, before improving in the second half of FY27 as deployment into higher-yielding domestic commercial advances picks up.
The key monitorable now is whether domestic deposit mobilisation can sustain growth once the FCNR(B) boost fades.

The 2026 Southwest Monsoon ended with a 12.7% rainfall deficit, making it the weakest monsoon performance in a decade. While the broader economy remains more resilient to rainfall shocks than in the past, emerging pressures on agriculture and food prices warrant close attention.
Key takeaways from our latest report:
• Rainfall deficits persisted across all regions, with the steepest shortfalls in East & North-East India and the South Peninsula.
• Reservoir storage recovered through the season but remains below both last year’s levels and seasonal norms, posing risks for rabi sowing.
• Kharif acreage declined 1.1% YoY, while weaker soil moisture and a strengthening El Niño raise concerns for rabi output.
• Food inflation risks are building, particularly in commodities such as sugar and edible oils, with weather-related uncertainties likely to remain a key watchpoint.
• CareEdge expects food inflation to peak in Q3 FY27, keeping the inflation outlook less benign.
A deficient monsoon may not impact growth substantially, but its impact on agri- production, inflation and rural demand remains critical to watch.
