A belief that really solidified for me this year is that if you are a romantic, and want to see the world full of magic and love, you have to create it.
Host the dinner party, send the flowers, write the note, share the compliment, put up the decorations, plan the outing, so on and so forth.
The default state of life is decay. To create a world that is warm and wonderful and one you and others want to participate in, you really have to work at it.
The good news is, it doesn't take that much work at all.
"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
thinkin about making a virtual operating system for toddler+ era
Rough idea is something like:
- each year build a couple apps as they age
- some for tailored learning, others for fun
- no internet
- sandbox they canβt exit by accident (they smash keys)
- open source ofc
- apps that arenβt annoying and fry your kids dopamine receptors

just wrapped 5y in Tokyo, thereβs an irony in that one of the most rules based societies allows just about anything when it comes to zoning and building.
Spaces that are unbelievably narrow or inaccessible or low ceilings, they just go with it, customers work it out.
My local cafe had roof beams that would hit you in the forehead if you donβt duck and it was a new build. Many restaurants had tight passages that requires guests to shufffle around each other. Basic but unimaginable in the west.
My home street had apartments, factories, a shipping depot, bakeries, shrines, a wine bar and retail all within 700ft of each other and this is more a residential area (kiyosumi).

So many thoughts to share, but Iβll note to start that the architecture is far more eclectic than even I thought it would be, the urbanism better, and idiosyncrasies burst from every seam
If youβre here, have recommendations, or any thoughts to share, let me know!
I think it helps that trains are the superior option to cars: no need to worry about wide roads, donβt need to build massive parking lots,
no traffic β all make it easy to increase density.
Our 50 unit apartment building only had 4 spots for folks that really wanted a car.
fetching in 2035 is gonna be craaazy
In Japan the residents in my apartment wash and then cut open the milk cartons so they compress nicely.
I hate the procedure but gotta respect the game.

Itβs uncool to try.
Itβs uncool to not try.
Itβs cool to look like youβre not trying.
Just rewatched good will hunting.
Know that saying, donβt meet your heroes, in the same spirit: donβt rewatch your favorite movies.
