Many thx to @auditedmedia for supporting @journal_list and our trust.txt system. By engaging ~1,100 media members, AAM is sending a collective trust signal that will elevate dependable news sites and distinguish journalists from misinformation peddlers. bit.ly/aam-trust
Transparency = credibility: This article from @auditedmedia + @DCNorg features JournalList and our trust.txt system as one of "3 tools to make media companies stand out in the age of AI." (DM if you want to know more about our media transparency system.) bit.ly/3FDMtbU
NPR's @davidfolkenflik reports below on local websites that masquerade as news to spread partisan propaganda.
At @Journal_List, we work with credible news media, deploying a system of "trust" files that help spotlight reliable sources of information. journallist.net
In Illinois, conservative papers spring to life in election season. They're full of attacks on Dems and just weird items made to look like local news, taking advantage of the erosion of newspapers.
There are 1200 such outlets nationally.

Thanks so much! And just FYI, the new exec. director of JournalList is @markstencel.
Today we are taking a look at an article @RJI on the growing usage of #trust.txt, a simple file that web scrapers can use to verify the #integrity of news websites. Interview highlight: @scodtt @EditorPublisher

We recently partnered with JournalList to include AAM-audited publishers in Trust.txt, an initiative designed to recognize publishers as members of trusted organizations. Here JournalList’s @markstencel discusses how the program helps quality publishers. hubs.ly/Q01dGKRX0
Thanks for this great write-up of journallist.net, and the trust.txt standard!
Currently, there are 93 industry groups, from The Associated Press to the Florida Press Association, that have endorsed the concept, and the list is growing as word spreads. rjionline.org/news/trust-txt…
Now that the Infrastructure bill is law, the importance of strong local news gets even more crucial, as local reporters help prevent waste, fraud and abuse. The local news payroll tax credit will end up saving taxpayers a lot of 💰, but only if the Senate keeps it in the bill.
House passes #BuildBackBetter Act, including payroll tax credit for local news orgs. The future of local journalism is now in Senate's hands. @Report4America's @StevenWaldman has issued the following statement on behalf of @Rebuild_News coalition: bit.ly/3oMy5Vx
This is exactly the kind of thing that trust.txt can help combat. Great story from @EditorPublisher.

Hey, @MichaelBennet and @Hickenlooper, this is the reality we face in rural Colorado if we don't get the Local Journalism Sustainability done. (HT @tabclay for noticing this from the @LimonLeader)

This is exactly the sort of problem solved by the "social=" designation in a trust.txt file from @journal_list

Interesting initiative from @DCNorg, introducing trust.txt framework to offer machine readable signal for trust, something much needed
Signal is simple - DCN membership. (Note: in surveys, members do very differently in terms of trust e.g WSJ vs Fox News)

Interesting, but also tragic. Other studies show that as local news dries up, people turn to inflammatory outlets, and become more extreme politically. This is the heart of why we need trust.txt & @journal_list, so the platforms can reliably tell if local news outlets are legit.
Interesting new paper showing that local news outlets do badly vs national news outlets, even on local stories in Google search. Reinforces how platform influence shapes the field of journalism up and down the media stack (h/t @ndiakopoulos ) nature.com/articles/s41562-0…
