Why do human brains take so long to mature? So excited to see this out in @Nature giving us some clues. Congrats to my friend (and former roommate) @RichardKoche and the wonderful team @MSKCancerCenter @gabriele_ciceri @studerl
Excited to see our work - showing that an epigenetic barrier sets the pace of human neuronal maturation - published @Nature. This is the “opus magnum” of @gabriele_ciceri in the lab @MSKCancerCenter with huge thanks to all the collaborators involved go.nature.com/48dhO0V.

A new theoretical framework for mapping the odor input space to the response properties of olfactory receptors - the revised version of our preprint is here: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
A joint work with Hamza Giaffar, @SergeyAShuvaev
and @AlexKoulakov. Comments are very welcomed.
The revised version of our preprint on primacy in olfaction with @DimaRinberg Hamza Giaffar and @SergeyAShuvaev was just posted. We show that i) two olfactory connectomes of different fruit flies can be aligned both in the PCA space and using single neurons and ii) MB neurons integrate inputs from the high-affinity (primacy) sets of olfactory receptors in agreement with the primacy theory. Very excited about these new results. Comments and suggestions are very welcome!

✨Be sure to check out this piece by the brilliant @luakoenig for @hii_magazine on the connection between the creative process in art and science! 🎨🎼👩🏻🔬There may be an interview with yours truly in there, along with links to some great music. 🧔🏻🎵🎸🎹
I’ve always felt that the creative processes of science and art closely mirror each other. Especially for something as weird and unique as consciousness. @hii_magazine gave me the opportunity to write about the parallels between science and music: tinyurl.com/yhmspxc9
Excited to share our ✨OPEN ACCESS✨ book chapter on using precision optogenetics for synthetic perception!! 💡🧠👃💻 @neurochong @LermanGilad @DimaRinberg @ShohamLab. link.springer.com/protocol/1…

Kudos to Hiro Nakayama and @rgerkin!
What is more similar: orange and apple or orange and lemon? You can ask this question to a human, but can you ask this question to a mouse?

A draft of our review paper (w/@scott_linderman) on single-trial neural data analysis is up on arxiv!
We discuss dynamically tracking cognitive states like attention, and how stats can still work when # trials is small relative to # neurons & conditions.

I made a video cheat sheet for 2D linear homogeneous continuous dynamical systems (governed by dx/dt = Ax). Each system has the same initial points and the same eigenvectors of A when possible - the dynamics differ based on the eigenvalues of A.

If I have one goal in every collaboration it's to change how you(, dear experimental collaborator,) think about models.
A model is not a result, it's an experimental system:
a personal model "organism" that embodies your ideas in a form you can test, poke, and explore.

About time 2P microscopy got cheaper/more compact. Good news for DIY-ers and those who require multiple lasers.
Hard to describe just how tiny the nearly handheld @CoherentInc Axon 920 nm ultrafast laser truly is. Pics with hand for scale. This little cutie is so slim, it had to be jacked up on posts to get to 'standard' Ti:Sapphire height!
Thanks @femto_mccoy for getting us one to demo!
