🚨A random solution to a growing fungal threat🚨 Our work on random peptide mixtures reveals potent antifungal activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens like C. auris, with low resistance potential and strong biofilm activity. Now out in mBio! journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128… ⬇️

I suspect (and I’m certainly not alone) that science without humans will be limited. I’m not sure AI scientists would pursue the same questions humans do, especially those driven by curiosity rather than immediate practicality. Plus, there's something really sad about science-without-scientists, it's like art-without-artists. Whether it's wishful thinking or not, the AI I want is AI that helps scientists, not AI that replaces them.
The AI Scientist, a new @Nature article making the case: "The dawn of a new era in which the process of discovery is no longer a solely human pursuit and in which the pace at which we are able to reap the harvest of scientific discovery could accelerate dramatically." nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Biology is likely to undergo a shift like Kuhn describes. Computer science types come into bio and bring their frameworks, without being conscious of how much their thinking is influenced by believing biology is just a ‘more complex computer.’ They’ll say, ‘It’s just like a computer, we’ll first model the cell, then a collection of cells, then the organism, then the society and so on.’ It won’t work. The collection of cells depend on instructions from the organism for their behaviour. The organism depends on the society. It can’t be recreated from the bottom up in layers like that. You can’t just skip over evolution. Many theories are looking like dead ends. E.g. so much work on finding and targeting driver mutations in cancer—but even if you could, theoretically, find all of them and target them, could you cure it? No. Why do we keep at it then? And why doesn’t it work?? Currently writing about this!!
Replying to @apralky
obviously Kuhn talks about this

I’m confused Synbio is going through a classic hype cycle -I wrote about it here: tinyurl.com/wkew69rs And yet…the bright new narrative is “biology is engineering”(again??) biology IS biology. That’s the exciting part! I mean tech’s big dream is to bring silicon to “life”

This seems massively overhyped. "Creating the dire wolves called for making just 20 edits in 14 genes in the common gray wolf." In other words, it's not a dire wolf - it's a gray wolf modified to be more like a dire wolf. That's a cool achievement but they have not 'brought the dire wolf back' sorry.
TIME's new cover: The dire wolf is back after over 10,000 years. Here's what that means for other extinct species ti.me/4jlJB54

So..fungi have VIRUSES which may make them more pathogenic Amazing discovery @ShlezingerLab @LererVanda So..maybe if we target those viruses... it might help defeat these hard to treat fungi which cause horrible disease in humans??

Thrilled and proud to have contributed to this nifty research by Prof. Zvi Hayouka and team, where synthetic peptides have been developed to disrupt quorum sensing—a key factor in triggering virulence in Bacillus species. Kudos! @HUJIAgri @jon_adeoye pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23…
