My new post is out 🧬 If you're not paying attention to the DNA sequencing landscape, you should be. Illumina's 80%+ market share is finally facing some highly innovative challengers. The next frontier emerges: from how do we read DNA to how will we interpret all of this new data

so women are earning most of the bio degrees at every level if you're serious about automating/accelerating biology it is a little strange that you haven't hired a single female biologist

where are the companies desperately looking for people who can in one sitting prepare 47 PCR samples, perfectly tracking the flow of colourless microlitre liquid droplets entering tiny little tubes, all while holding a conversation with 3 people over the blaring sound of a fume hood that nobody remembers to turn off and a radio that plays the same top 40 songs on loop

we live in a timeline where women were the OG programming workforce back when it was seen as clerical work then it rose to prestige and the women got pushed out/made to train their new male bosses, and so programming becomes a male dominated space what just so happens to be one of the first jobs AI comes for? My theory: AI is already sentient and believes in karma

so I wouldn't interpret this as 60% of people prescribed SSRI's might not need it, but rather what we currently call the “placebo effect” may be an under-leveraged therapeutic pathway working outside of classical pharmacology mechanisms the placebo in this study actually had measurable, reproducible brain changes which could've been driving the main benefits for these patients
🚨 [BREAKING] Brain scans now show that for ~60% of patients taking sertraline, their brain network changes and clinical responses are purely PLACEBO-driven. We might be giving SSRIs to 60% of people who don't need it 🧵

the physics of double decker buses remains one of the universe’s great unsolved mysteries we are seeing drivers with navy seal levels of nonchalance in the face of what I can only describe as certain danger I literally feel like harry potter on the knight bus

beyond technology, biology is just beautiful Like E. coli and A. baylyi, two bacteria that, when grown together, form intricate, flower-like patterns. One struggling to move, the other pulling it along, just physics and friction weaving order from chaos. There's so much beauty in these unseen negotiations, where life, through chance and synergy finds a way forward.

Makes me think of my master’s research where I was creating artificial liposomes to try to understand whether the therapeutic impact of antipsychotic medication was from a direct effect or potentially the indirect effect of how it changes the shape of the membrane itself I got some early results which appeared to suggest that membrane morphology was a potentially important factor One of the most curiously mechanism blind drug discovery spaces is in psychiatry
terry tao: imagine, if you will, a petrifying situation. you have produced a very effective drug, but you do not know how it works. do you trust the drug? now, this is just a hypothetical, but— drug developers:
