Coming up for air now after a very dense excellent week in Seoul at KBW, while staying on top of our response to a security event affecting part of our infrastructure. I can now respond to queries and speculation regarding what is impacted and what is not affected. Based on our investigation to date, there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds in wallets have been affected. Your Secret Recovery Phrase, your keys, and the assets in your wallet were not part of this incident because they CANNOT be. You custody and control your own keys. That is how self custody works. You are fully in control of your own money in MetaMask. Like many providers in our industry, we constantly face attempted attacks from a range of threat actors and periodically encounter security issues. Our approach follows established best practice: we do not publicly discuss the details of an open incident, but we disclose promptly to partners and relevant stakeholders once an issue is sufficiently understood. In this case, we shared the relevant details with partners, agreed and implemented a response strategy together, and then disclosed publicly. As a precaution, we and our partners rotated validator keys. That step is operationally inconvenient which is regrettable as validators must exit the staking queue and then re-enter the queue to restake, which takes time. The validator staking architecture of Ethereum separates the key that proposes and attests from the key that can withdraw the stake. In accordance with the Ethereum principle of self-custody, we do not hold withdrawal keys for our clients. Because of that separation, an issue in the validator infrastructure CANNOT result in the improper movement of the underlying ETH. Rotating those keys was how we reduced residual operational risk. Self-custody and user control are a central design principle guiding how we build -- in MetaMask, in staking and validation, and across Ethereum more broadly. Self custody plus rigorous decentralization represents a paradigm shift in security. Increasingly, the world is waking up to the benefits of this sounder architecture.

Whatever people think of MetaMask, it remains one of the best security focused orgs in the space, going out of the way to protect users. There was literally 0 fund loss, and still mobs of rabid trolls and doomers spread the most crazy and nonsensical FUD for days. Will any of them now apologize?

Security Update: We are responding to a security incident affecting part of our infrastructure. At this time, we have identified no immediate threat to MetaMask wallets. As a precaution, we are proactively exiting affected validators within our non-custodial staking operations, in coordination with clients, partners and security advisors. We’ll share further updates as appropriate. metamask.io/news/user-update…

If you have not heard this news story, it is pretty big in the chemistry world. Being able to break down polyethylene cheaply is a big deal. It makes waste plastic more valuable, which makes it less likely people will just throw it into rivers where it flushes into the oceans.
Polyethylene contains approximately 46 megajoules of chemical energy per kilogram (about ten times the energy content of TNT by mass) stored stably in its carbon-hydrogen bonds rather than as explosive potential. The Oak Ridge molten-salt process announced this week is essentially an engineered way to release that energy as liquid fuel rather than letting it sit in a landfill.

Heads up for any companies using Deel: we are seeing highly targeted social engineering phone calls from threat actors posing as Deel employees. They appear to be leveraging info from a data breach Deel experienced in June.

Coming out of my cave for some penultimate (personal) thoughts on CLARITY: -Tremendous thank you to everyone who worked hard on meaningful crypto legislation, across the industry and on capitol hill. -I think CLARITY will pass. If it doesn't, it's simply because lines have been drawn across political parties. Democrats getting in bed with the banking establishment and the casino lobby was not necessarily on my bingo card five years ago, but we are where we are. Voting against it is simply trying to vote for the status quo, and is not a serious representation of the American people. This country is where it is precisely because we innovate. For years we've been calling for responsible legislation (which this is) while certain democrats have been calling the industry outlaws and pirates. At the end, it is the democrats pushing against responsible legislation that protects American consumers and innovation in the name of protecting incumbent interests. Pretty gross, actually. But that's baseball. -Fortunately, we have forward looking leadership in nearly every key federal agency who I believe will immediately move to fill the gap created if CLARITY does not pass. I think there's a logical case that agency actions will extend farther than CLARITY because they invested so much to get this done on a bipartisan basis. Is legislation better? Absolutely simply because it is more durable. But durability through both agency action AND commercial evolution and adoption is nearly equivalent in my eyes. -We will rapidly expand from the close of CLARITY, one way or another, and this chapter will give way to one that fosters serious use cases and adoption of the technology (you can see this now, but you haven't seen anything yet).

NEW: Consensys Software Inc. will split into two independently operated companies, with the existing entity rebranding as MetaMask and focusing on consumer-facing self-custodial finance. A newly formed company will retain the Consensys name and house its protocols and institutional blockchain infrastructure businesses, including Linea and Besu, with Mike Kriak as CEO and David Cunningham as president. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with Joe Lubin serving as MetaMask’s chairman and CEO and executive chairman of Consensys.

For over a decade, our teams helped build the foundations of Ethereum. MetaMask grew out of that work with a simple bet: people should be able to interact with Ethereum directly and control their own assets. Ten years later, MetaMask has become the world's most widely used self-custodial wallet. And self custody has become a foundational primitive for our ecosystem, and soon for the world. The original MetaMask vision has grown into something much bigger. We're building MetaMask into a place where people can hold, spend, trade and grow their money on open rails, while remaining in control. Becoming an independent company gives MetaMask the focus to take that vision much further.
Today, MetaMask begins its next chapter as an independent company. Consensys Software Inc., the company behind MetaMask, is rebranding as MetaMask, fully focused on the consumer platform. The protocols and institutional infrastructure businesses, including Linea, are becoming a newly formed company that will carry the Consensys name forward. 🧵

Today, Consensys Software Inc. (CSI) is becoming two independent companies. CSI will continue as the same company and rebrand as MetaMask, operating the MetaMask platform and its consumer-facing products, with Joe Lubin as Chairman and CEO. CSI’s Protocols Group and institutional blockchain infrastructure business, including Linea and its broader portfolio of enterprise and Ethereum protocol infrastructure, will become a newly formed company, named Consensys, under Mike Kriak (CEO), David Cunningham (President), Declan Fox (CPO), with Joe Lubin as Executive Chairman. This evolution reflects a turning point in both markets CSI has built over the past decade: consumer self-custody has moved into mainstream financial behavior, while institutional demand has moved from pilots to production. Each now requires its own operating model, dedicated leadership and focused investment strategy to scale. Learn more: metamask.io/news/consensys-s…

A fun thing Tesla could do: map pot holes and generally measure road quality/ride smoothness. Then rank municipalities on road quality and how quickly they fix potholes. Some good ol’ fashion competition might help make things better!

When platforms like Revolut bring Euro-backed stablecoins to Ethereum, they are choosing the network with the deepest liquidity, the most battle-tested security, and the most composable infrastructure. The world’s institutions are choosing Ethereum. The choice is clear. Congrats to @Revolut and @stablecoin.
We’re rolling out EURR, our first euro-backed stablecoin, in the Revolut app.

The biggest problem with nomads is that they are broke ass people in their own country and just leveraging on their currency to stay solvent in SEA, which is why you never see any “digital nomads” in Singapore. Cos those broke asses can’t afford it.
Haha after the Network School debacle, I really do hope SEA wakes up to this phenomenon of western nomads disrespecting everyone everywhere they are.

This reporter emailed me describing these as "difficulties at Consensys" and "insider trading on the IPO." Not only are these many months/years old and obviously nonsensical, they tell the exact opposite story of "difficulties." This is exactly what good corporate governance and policies look like. What bugged me the most when Nate got thrown under the bus at OpenSea was that I felt like the company failed to do right by its employees in their own policies and reinforcement of those policies and then railroaded him in the process. We have always been active about having forward leaning policies chiefly guided by ethics and the law, and we spend a ton of time making sure our employees are aware of those policies in any and all circumstances, including reminding them if anything feels off to us. Not sure what this reporter's purported angle or motive is, but things are great at Consensys. Have good policies. Remind and enforce them when you need to. You'll have the opposite of "difficulties."
The blockchain firm Consensys caught some of its staff on Polymarket betting on product release timing, according to a company-wide message provided to me by a source. Here's the note from General Counsel Matt Corva, plus later chatter about betting on a looming IPO:
