I know you're tired. I know COVID-19 is overwhelming. It's been a scary few months.
For many of us across the world, the foundation has been ripped out from under us, but can you do me this one thing?

Stopping climate change is only expensive compared to an imaginary world where climate change doesn't exist. It's *incredibly cheap* compared to the actual cost of a 3 degree warmer world.

This speech from @SachaBaronCohen is so good -- such an eloquent, deeply informed, absolutely uncompromising summary of the threat to democracy from social media-enabled conspiracy and disinformation --
I'm posting it again.

Here are four points that I think are poorly understood that will not brighten your evening.
I've said it before, but it's important.
1) Australia will not meet its Paris goal under current policy settings. We won't even be close. We miss it by a mile on *all* estimates.

Headlines like this make it harder for climate advocates to do our job of pressuring policy makers to actually do their job. #Renewable Industry folks (@cleannrgcouncil @Vestas and others), I know its Aussie to say "she'll be right mate" but we have a #climatecrisis!

The #climatestrike movement demands your attention.
The world's youth are staring a planetary catastrophe in the face and refusing to pretend that going on with life as usual is a sensible, moral or practical thing to do.

Only a matter of time until climate policies begin to impact trade negotiations. The next logical step is carbon tariffs, which will penalize climate laggards such as Australia and US where it hurts

🤓 for clear energy discussions it's best to avoid the word "baseload"!
four uses i've encountered:
1. inflexible steady power — coal
2. flexible power on demand — gas, hydro (+batteries)
3. lowest generation level for a power station or fleet
4. minimum demand over a period
Nanette on Netflix easily the best standup show I’ve seen in my life. Insightful, funny and provocative perspectives on sexuality, feminism, gender, art history(!) and the power and pitfalls of comedy / story-telling as a tool to improve society. Well done @Hannahgadsby

“If a problem cannot be solved, enlarge it.” —President Eisenhower Most try to make tough problems solvable by chopping them up into smaller pieces. But this sacrifices the design space we need to consider options, degrees of freedom, synergies. Enlarge your systems’ boundaries. xitter.cf/harvardalumni/status/9…

Friendly reminder here: Blockchain might be a great way to settle transactions, but it doesn't tell you how to operate the power grid, aka the world's largest and most complex interconnected machine, within narrow physical constraints in real time.
