Below is the main reason why gold is holding up so well despite rising interest rates, a relatively strong US dollar (temporarily) and the Western investors' ill-advised ardor for AI bubble stocks. Shouldn't take much buying from Western investors to send gold into another rollicking rally.

there's also a highly relevant nuance in the types of Chinese steel imported to the three countries.
The majority of Mexican steel imports from China are flat-rolled steel, which is used in automotive, appliances etc, some of which is destined for US market.
In contrast, the majority of Canadian steel imports from China (a tiny minority of all available steel in Canada) is alloy steel bars, rods angles etc. Much, if not most of this, is used domestically in Canada.
The recent trade case involving an unscrupulous trader concerned falsely labeled flat-rolled steel - an almost microscopic import into Canada.

I have to fact check Donald Trump because he keeps spewing nonsense in regards to the US - Canada trade and none of the people around him seem to have the spine to correct him.

The US buys discounted oil from Canada that greatly contributes to the country. Also this is goods based deficit. If you add services, which the US has a $25B+ in trade surplus in Canada than the actual trade deficit is much smaller, around $21B according to USTR in 2025. That's on $880B in the two trade. ~3%.

Canada has more oil and almost double the gas - which is just starting to be developed at scale. We also have different type of oil which aren't substitutes and bring massive value to the US.

Not only Canada has much more lumber, the dominant supplier to the US but it is also a different type. Because of the climate, species and fiber. It is used for different purposes. Canadian lumber is used for framing, roof trusses, 2×4, 2×6.

Besides the above, yes you do. Canada has all the critical minerals the US needs and wants and makes NA self sufficient. This also why they want to secure its trade as part of the negotiations.
The US - Canada trade is highly beneficial and intertwined; manufacturing systems are integrated, energy is physically joined, infrastructure like rail run across continuously, Canadian pension funds are some of the largest institutio investors in America.

Today VP Vance said Canada and China are "the two worst countries" on trade policy. That's an opinion, his right. But because Vance specifically complained about Canada's super-high dairy tariffs (which, again, only kick in above a quota), here's some interesting WTO data via @trevortombe:
96.7% of US agricultural exports to Canada are duty-free compared to...4.5% of US agricultural exports to China.

The US National Debt has increased by over $3 trillion, there was no tariff dividend to the people, and inflation has risen.
The US National Debt has increased by over $550 billion since July 1st.

Everything they said about "balancing the budget" was a lie.

Sure, Treasury and a handful of funds might be working some magic behind the scenes. But on the physical side, the reality is crude is still moving through Hormuz.
The STS trade in the Gulf of Oman is booming right now. Satellite shots from yesterday clearly show a heavy crowd of tankers conducting STS ops at first glance.
It’s obviously a slower and pricier setup than normal transit. That said the volume of barrels flowing right now is definitely far from negligible.

Imagine if the Chinese military equivalent of DARPA was entertaining grant proposals from Chinese NGOs and universities to carry out research on bats in USA, noting as a purported justification that Chinese military were at risk from coronaviruses from US bats.
And that the proposal called for a comprehensive modeling of coronaviruses in bat caves throughout USA; followed by experimental inoculation of bat populations in the USA.
And that the Chinese NGOs sponsoring this research had close funding and research associations with (say) the Rocky Mountain Lab, as memorialized by a group photo of the entire lab staff with the leaders of the Chinese NGO in the front and center.
Obviously, US government would be hysterical at the idea of Chinese DARPA grantees experimenting with coronaviruses in US bat caves. And yet no one seems to have thought that there was anything odd about US DARPA grantees doing exactly that in Chinese bat caves,
the reference contains a link to the DARPA proposal drasticresearch.org/wp-conte… which states that their objective was to "defuse the potential for spillover of novel bat-origin high-zoonotic risk SARS-related coronaviruses in Asia".
In year 1, they proposed to "create a prototype app for the warfighter that identifies the likelihood of bats harboring dangerous pathogens at any site across Asia".
In year 2, they proposed to "evaluate two approaches to reduce SARSr-CoV shedding in cave bats": (1) "inoculate bats with immune modulators" and (2) "inoculate bats with novel chimeric polyvalent recombinant spike proteins plus the immune modulator".
