Is there something deep or interesting that the seeds of so many waves of research and break-throughs in AI have come out of work in machine-translation? The Georgetown experiment, the original Prolog, and attention all.

As the saying goes, repost ≠ endorsement.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a 10-page memo signaling a retreat from its traditional role of giving grants to individual researchers to pursue their best ideas and to train the next generation of scientists. Instead, the memo makes clear, NSF will devote the bulk of its resources to addressing the research priorities of President Donald Trump and his administration, many of them technology focused. scim.ag/4ipE1kY

I said we needed to put a pause on AI back when I saw miniKanren generating quines. Nobody listened, and it was too late once the relational interpreters were distilled by microKanren.

Tom Hanks in the MCU when? I don't know what role, but just it feels like it's time they made Tom Hanks a marvel baddie.

We talk a lot about a programming language being the ultimate software configuration tool for _adding_ expressivity, but I don't hear often enough about it also being the ultimate tool for _constraining_ expressivity. Which seems timely.

ordinaryabundance.com/ very soothing to stop and recall just how much of our species's history would have considered this time and place to be paradise. I recall seeing someone point out that my bucket of accumulated excess IKEA hardware would once have been wealth unimaginable

I've heard several times now, "The coding was never the hard part!". Cope? That hasn't been my lived experience. For the people who do believe it, I hope it's because they found coding always intuitive and fun---not just because they found the other parts to be even worse.

This feeling of acceleration, of cutting-edge skills becoming obsolete as fast or faster than it takes to acquire them---isn't that what those folks said The Singularity would feel like? What's weird is how it feels so unevenly distributed right now.

This feels like the kind of moment that future scholars will closely study, and so probably good for us all to take really detailed contemporaneous records of actions, feelings and ideas.

That's the closest I've got to coherent; if you've all thoughts I'd love to hear them.
