Loved my time investing but when I caught up with @bykahlil, the opportunity to be at the frontier of defining how money moves agentically was too hard to pass up. Excited to be on this side of the table and building towards this future with the team at @naturalpay!
Today, @jerrylu is joining @naturalpay as our first GTM hire after spending the last five years investing at @maveron. Your career is long. I first met Jerry in November 2022 while pitching Ivella. Different company, different vision, and, frankly, a very different level of ambition and execution. When you’re in the throes of fundraising, it’s easy to become myopic. Someone passes and you think, “I’m never going to engage with them again.” Going on six years in the Valley, I can tell you that’s basically never how it works. I remember meeting Jerry and immediately liking his energy. We didn’t get to a deal, but we stayed in touch. Turns out the world had more in store for our story. As we started building out GTM at Natural, I kept thinking about how valuable it would be to have someone come from venture. Someone who had spent years talking to the exact customers we were selling to, and understood the landscape because they had spent years sitting on the other side of the table. The harder part was finding someone who was also a culture fit, and willing to put all of their eggs in one basket because they believed that deeply in the mission and vision. Turns out that person was Jerry. Jerry was already driving customers toward Natural before the first day of his onsite. By the time he showed up, it felt like he belonged here. Today is technically Jerry’s first day at Natural, but it already feels like he’s been here for a while. So excited to have him. He’s going to be a big part of our story. natural.com/blog/why-jerry-j…

Wabi 2.0 is live! personal agents are one person, one chat. but the parts of life that matter run on more than one person Wabi is an agent you use together. you talk to it, it does stuff, builds the apps you need, and anyone can join the thread - your partner, your best friend, the preschool moms groupchat school changes pickup time → Wabi updates the family calendar, everyone sees it. a show you’d both love → Wabi finds a night that works, gets the tickets. the trip everyone keeps talking about → Wabi picks the dates, builds the itinerary, books it go start a thread with your people 👇

Today, @sarxhxu is joining our marketing team at @naturalpay from Cognition. We’ve been recruiting to add to our marketing team for a while, but I’ve been incredibly selective. It’s tricky to find someone who can marry technical marketing, product marketing, brand, and storytelling. Sarah is one of the few people I’ve met who has that combination. Increasingly, you’re seeing decision-making shift from humans to agents. Whether that’s procuring software, booking restaurants, or moving money. What happens when our job is no longer putting up billboards targeting founders in San Francisco, but instead getting your Muse agent to choose Natural? That’s Sarah’s job. At the same time, I want to be driving towards that future because of how much more human the world can become, not towards some dystopian, hyper-technological future where technology becomes the point. That’s an ethos Sarah and I share. It’s going to be an exciting year ahead. Natural is about to enter its most consequential four quarters. There’s a massive wave coming, and either we paddle fast enough to catch it or we don’t. Either way, we’ve spent the last year preparing for what we believe will be the most dramatic change in financial services in decades. Very excited to have Sarah here for it. natural.com/blog/why-sarah-j…

I am having all of these conversations, so let me tell you what is about to happen in banking over the next few years. There are roughly ~4,000 banks in the US, and the vast majority still run on legacy cores like FIS, Fiserv, and Jack Henry. These systems were not built for modern programmatic banking, let alone agentic payments, where the entire financial stack needs to be exposed through programmable surfaces. Agents are going to accelerate consolidation across banking. They will route activity toward financial institutions that are the most programmable, the easiest to integrate with, and offer the most rational economics. Unlike humans, agents do not care about branches, brand affinity, or decades-old banking relationships. That creates enormous pressure on both ends of the market. Across both G-SIBs and the long tail of regional and community banks, deposits, payment volume, and eventually credit activity will increasingly concentrate around a much smaller number of institutions built to support programmatic financial activity. The result will be significant compression in bank balance sheets and payment volume across the industry, accelerating consolidation and, in some cases, bank failures. The banking system was built around human distribution. Agents are going to reprice that distribution advantage very quickly.
Fascinating. Chief Economist at Apollo: agents could cause a bank run by sweeping household cash into accounts paying 3-5% instead of the 0.1% national average, causing banks to lose a large share of their cheap deposits.

Excited to share our investment in Stickerbox, a new creative tool that lets kids turn their ideas into real stickers using AI in a safe and tactile way. It is one of the most magical physical manifestations of AI I’ve seen and we view it as an early look at what a kids-safe AI frontend can become. I’ve known @ajustrun since my days as an admittedly former hypebeast and early @grailed user. Grailed was a culturally defining platform for our corner of the internet and reshaped how a whole community discovered and expressed style. Seeing how Arun built that brand and culture left a strong impression, and we're excited to see him apply that same product intuition and cultural cachet to this next chapter. Go order your Stickerbox today @ stickerbox.com

EPISODE 3 OF MAKING CENTS WITH @EvanZhao6 IS NOW LIVE Evan is a scientist by trade and serial founder who sold his last company to ODDITY for $76 million 🤯 🤑 I wanted to have Evan on the pod because a) I like evan and its fun to hangout with him, but also b) because I wanted to get perspective on a few things that our conversation centered around: - What is it like to sell your business to a public company? - What is it like to then become a C-Suite executive at said public company. - How important is IP in getting acquired? It’s a conversation about science, storytelling, and scaling - with plenty of behind-the-scenes insight from someone who’s done all three. Listen now on Spotify and Youtube. Link in the comments

We didn't spend the day talking to Costco's CEO and CFO about "founder mode." What we did learn was about humble, disciplined growth, and prioritizing curation/quality over choice. We wrote up everything we learned about Costco's manifesto here, for the benefit of consumer & retail entrepreneurs. @Maveron @Levitan @jstoffer Enjoy! 👇
