Let's talk about Argentina defensively. Argentina's defensive DNA. Their man-oriented approach. Their short centre-backs. Their bravery. Menotti. Bilardo. Bielsa. Ayala. Mascherano. Lisandro Martínez. There is a clear identity behind all of it. Argentina defend differently from almost every other team, and there is a clear explanation for it. Out of possession, they usually defend in a 4-4-2 mid-block with Messi and Julián Álvarez as the two forwards. Normally, in a 4-4-2, the strikers are responsible for protecting central spaces and stepping forward to press while cover-shadowing the opposition's midfielder, at least making sure he cannot receive easily. Argentina don't do that because of Messi. Instead, Messi and Julián Álvarez push onto the opposition centre-backs, leaving the opposition's #6 for Enzo Fernández to mark aggressively. As a result, Argentina effectively transform their defensive shape into a 4-4-2 diamond, but they do so in a very man-oriented way. Enzo follows the opposition #6, Paredes tracks the #8, while the wingers follow the opposition full-backs. There is only one moment when Argentina's midfielders stop following their direct opponents: when those opponents move outside Argentina's defensive structure. As long as an opponent is inside the defensive structure, Argentina defend man-to-man. Once he moves outside it, he is no longer considered an immediate threat, so they are happy to leave him free. Obviously, defending in a mid-block with such a strong man-oriented approach isn't ideal. The opposition can manipulate those individual markers, dragging midfielders out of position and opening spaces in front of the defensive line for attacking players to receive. This is where Argentina's two centre-backs become so important. Cuti Romero and Lisandro Martínez are incredibly aggressive at stepping out of the defensive line to win duels. They are fearless when it comes to leaving their positions to anticipate forwards and regain possession. You simply cannot defend the way Argentina do without centre-backs like them. To fully understand this, though, we need to understand Argentine football and some of the coaches who shaped its defensive identity. Being aggressive and brave without the ball is deeply rooted in Argentina's football culture. Coaches like Bilardo and Bielsa established the tradition of intense man-to-man defending, the famous "mano a mano". Menotti, meanwhile, popularised "el achique": pushing the defensive line forward as a coordinated offside trap to compress space and apply pressure. Another concept closely associated with Argentine coaching is "el anticipo", the ability of defenders to step in front of their opponent and win the ball before he can receive it. It is a defensive quality that has become less common in modern football, yet it remains a defining characteristic of many Argentine centre-backs. I've worked under two Argentine coaches during my career, and they were both among the bravest defensive coaches I've ever had. Their teams were far more aggressive than those of many other coaches, who generally preferred a more conservative defensive approach. Argentine players grow up being encouraged to press aggressively and defend man-to-man, even when they are physically inferior to their direct opponents. It is part of their football education from a very young age. If you defend this way with a high defensive line, size and physicality become less important because you spend far less time defending inside your own penalty area. It is no coincidence that some of Argentina's greatest centre-backs have not been particularly tall. Daniel Passarella, Roberto Ayala, Javier Mascherano and Lisandro Martínez are all under 1.80 metres, yet each became one of the best defenders of his generation because of his aggression, anticipation and competitiveness. Everyone talks about how good Argentina are in possession, but their defensive identity deserves just as much appreciation. They may not have the tallest centre-backs, but they have some of the most aggressive. They are willing to step out of position, defend "mano a mano", and trust themselves to win individual duels. Even if they may be physically inferior in many of those battles, they consistently compensate with aggression, anticipation, bravery and an extraordinary competitive mentality.
