The authors of this book published a case study in 2019 that examined 11m tax returns.
A typical firm owned by the top 0.1% is a regional business with $20m in sales and 100 employees, such as an auto dealer, beverage distributor, or a large law firm.
The 5 largest industries within the top 0.1%:
1) Legal services ($28.6B)
2) Other financial investment activity ($28.2B)
3) Other professional and technical services($8.2B)
4) Offices of physicians ($8.0B)
5) Auto dealers ($6.7B)
Part-way through this book, which was written, at least in part, to get the media and left-wing policy analysts to shift their focus from "tech billionaires" to "other" rich people.
But I don't see how you can read it without coming away inspired by the risk acceptance, ingenuity, patience and hard work of the men and women who build and grow the small-to-medium sized businesses that power our economy.

Congratulations to Toronto’s SickKids Hospital: the world’s best children’s hospital for the second year in a row.
Canada’s health care system is one of our greatest strengths. It’s a reflection of our values — powered by the incredible nurses, doctors, researchers, and staff who deliver world-class, life-saving care every day.

Canada announces 100% depreciation for more assets.
For context, if you buy $100 of equipment for your business, you generally cannot deduct the whole $100 right away. You write it off slowly:
Year 1: $30
Year 2: $14 (20% of the $70 left over)
Year 3: $11 ((20% of the $56 left over)
And so on, for years.
You’ve spent the money today, but the tax savings come over many years.
Canada is now announcing that you can now write off the full 100% in year 1 on many assets including equipment, furniture, software, computers, patents, pipelines, rail tracks, roads, etc.
A few things to keep in mind:
1) This is important because the U.S. already lets businesses do this. So it makes us more competitive.
2) One thing to watch out for is implementation. This is an announcement but not yet law. It’s possible CRA may disallow this until it actually becomes law.

Every once in awhile, it occurs to me there are millions of small biz owners out there, quietly serving customers' shifting needs, employing people, paying vendors, following regulations, paying taxes, etc. & still managing to make enough $$ to take care of their families.
These people are heroes.

Super excited to announce Exonas Capital’s acquisition of Howard Supply Company, alongside our co-sponsor Atlasview Equity Partners and our financing partner Brightwood Capital Advisors.
Howard has been supplying the U.S. oilfield since 1937, and we cannot wait to work alongside CEO Paul Jeffries and the Howard team to build on that legacy through organic growth and disciplined acquisitions.
