My loss (of job) is your gain. I'm offering 10% off my next Hotwire course which is in early access and still in development with the coupon code LAYOFF.

The splat (*) operator has a variety of uses in Ruby, one of my favourites is array manipulation. It allows you to construct and destructure arrays more concisely and explicitly than similar available functionalities.

a gentle reminder—the rails community has always been bigger than just one person.
the rails community was built by every person who contributed to, wrote/spoke about, taught, and found joy in the framework. and as long as those folks are around, it will continue to flourish. ♥️

I described Javan once as "one box where you input hard problems and solutions just come out". He's seriously amazing and among the best humans I've ever worked with ❤️ Already jealous of his future workmates!
Hi friends, I’ve had a nice long break and I’m ready to get back at it. If you’re familiar with my work and know of any interesting job openings that align, hit me up!

Javan is one of the best that I've worked with!
I used to struggle hard with js, but through his example, patient pairing sessions, code reviews, + amazing inventions, it became so fun to write js.
He's a wonderful person, a kind teammate, and a brilliant programmer.

Javan is a gem of a human, and if you are looking to hire someone who is thoughtful, kind and smart, you should put his name at the top of your list. Working with him was a joy and I learnt so, so much.

As tech workers, we create the tools that power the @nytimes. We work together, build together, and are ready to vote yes for our union. If management insists on engaging in Unfair Labor Practices and dividing us, we will have no choice but to walk out together tomorrow at noon.

TIL ResizeObserver & IntersectionObserver need to be manually disconnected, else they leak memory through their callback.
This happens in all browsers.
MutationObserver and event listeners don't have this issue.
Make sure you manually disconnect resize/intersection observers!

ALT // An element is leaked with every click: button.onclick = () => { const el = document.createElement('div'); new ResizeObserver( () => console.log('resize', el.getBoundingClientRect()) ).observe(el); document.body.append(el); // later… el.remove(); }; // Doesn't leak: button.onclick = () => { const el = document.createElement('div'); const resizeObserver = new ResizeObserver( () => console.log('resize', el.getBoundingClientRect()) ); resizeObserver.observe(el); document.body.append(el); // later… el.remove(); resizeObserver.disconnect(); };

We’re getting closer to the Modern JS book’s fully Hotwire-compatible beta version. Which means we are looking for tech reviewers.
If you are interested, DM me. All levels of previous knowledge welcome. Thanks — reviewers make the book better!
