🇺🇳 UN side event: The right of return can halt Azerbaijan's genocidal impunity 🇦🇲
The right of return for the Armenians of #NagornoKarabakh / Artsakh is critical to ending appeasement of Azerbaijan, which now seeks control of Armenia.
That was the message of international lawyer Karnig Kerkonian at the 63rd @UN Human Rights Council, at our side event last week.
@kerkonian cautioned that the international community's silence on the 2023 ethnic cleansing sets a dangerous global precedent, threatening the Republic of Armenia itself.
Human rights advocates and legal experts warned that true peace cannot be built on economic trade deals or geopolitical compromises that force an entire community to permanently abandon their ancestral homes and have their ancient heritage destroyed.
The statement outlined three critical pillars to dismantle Baku's campaign of destruction:
- A collective return: It was an entire indigenous Christian people that was forcefully displaced, not random individuals.
- International protection: Repatriation requires robust external security guarantees because active genocidal intent persists.
- Fundamental human rights: The Artsakh Armenians must return with their right to life and right to self-determination fully intact.
CSI echoes this critical call to action, urging international institutions and Western governments to aggressively enforce the ICJ mandate for the right of return via the Swiss Peace Initiative.

AIPAC-aligned Democrat Henry Beck is hosting a big ticket fundraiser in New York City for Troy Jackson's Senate Campaign this week. Jackson will headline the pro-Israel host's event, according to a copy of an invitation obtained by Drop Site’s @nathantbernad.
The fundraiser host, Beck, a former state treasurer, has been a leading pro-Israel advocate in Maine, having recently moved to NYC to work for an asset management firm. In January 2024, he traveled to Israel to meet with IDF soldiers as part of a 10-person delegation organized by the American Israel Education Foundation, AIPAC’s arm which funds trips to Israel.
While State Treasurer, Beck released a controversial statement from the Treasurer's office on the one-year anniversary of October 7 on the importance of “maintain[ing] our important relationship with the people of Israel,” while declining to mention any of Israel’s war crimes. At the time of Beck's one-year anniversary statement, the United Nations reported that Israeli attacks had killed over 41,600 Palestinians following the October 7 attack. Women and children accounted for at least half of the death toll.
Asked for comment, the Jackson campaign did not directly address what the fundraiser means as it pertains to Jackson’s commitment to confronting Israel’s genocide. Jackson campaign spokesperson Cheyenne Gallivan told Drop Site in a statement: “Troy opposes U.S. taxpayer-funded military aid to Israel, has described Israel’s assault on Gaza as a genocide, and has pledged to reject money from AIPAC.”

‼️BREAKING NEWS‼️
Archaeologists uncover one of the world’s oldest churches: “Sensational testimony to early Christianity” CBS NEWS
Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of an Armenian church dating back almost 2,000 years, making it the oldest structure of its kind in the country and one of the oldest in the world. Germany’s University of Münster, which partnered with a team at the Armenian Academy of Sciences on the archaeological dig, announced the discovery Friday and called it “a sensational testimony to early Christianity in Armenia.”
The joint team of archaeologists and researchers uncovered the building during excavations in Artaxata, once a thriving metropolis and commercial center, which for several centuries before and after the common era served as the capital of the ancient Armenian kingdom. Excavations were part of the larger Armenian-German Artaxata Project, an initiative started in 2018 to study the area.
Experts believe the church found recently in Artaxata was originally built in the 4th century A.D. That timing coincides with the construction of Etchmiadzin Cathedral, also in Armenia, which is considered the ancient kingdom’s first cathedral and is often regarded as the oldest cathedral in the world.
“The building, which dates back to the 4th century, is the oldest archaeologically documented church in the country — a sensational testimony to early Christianity in Armenia,” Achim Lichtenberger, a professor at the University of Münster who works on the archaeology project in Artaxata, said in a statement.
Mkrtich Zardaryan of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, who also worked on the project, noted separately that the architecture of the church may help researchers understand something new about Armenia’s history. The church is shaped like an octagon, with rectangular chambers extending out from four of the sides. It is the first octagonal church known to exist in Armenia, Zardaryan said, adding that churches with that shape typically appear in the eastern Mediterranean and can similarly date back as far as the 4th century.
The ancient church resembled early Christian memorial buildings, according to the University of Münster. It measured about 100 feet across and originally had mortar flooring, created mostly from sand and cement, with walls made from thick slabs of terracotta — a clay material that at the time was produced in places like Greece and Italy.
Pieces of the original material discovered at the site of the ruins suggested the church was decorated lavishly with terracotta, likely imported from the Mediterranean. Remains of wooden platforms found along with the clay helped researchers confirm the building’s ancient origins by way of carbon dating, the university said.
