what i have been saying since August 2023: AI returns aren’t enough to justify the expense. so far, anyway, the numbers have not proven me wrong.

Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. businessinsider.com/amazon-2…
Free newsletter: I estimate that ~50% of AI chip sales - $200bn to $300bn+ - are sitting in warehouses, with NVIDIA selling hundreds of billions of GPUs years in advance. Data centers take way longer to build than hyperscalers are leading us to believe. wheresyoured.at/wherere-all-…

Kaja Kallas saying publicly what many European officials and diplomats say privately.
"American negotiators have been trying to push Ukraine into surrender for already almost two years, one and a half years now. Why Ukraine hasn't surrendered on Putin's terms is because Europe has been supporting Ukraine," High Representative Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday.

MORE: Russia’s ongoing long-range strike campaign against Ukrainian energy infrastructure continues to degrade Ukraine’s energy sector and disproportionately harms civilians. Daytime Russian strikes are also inflicting significant civilian casualties. ⬇️ The Ukrainian Air Force reported on October 19 that Russia launched an unspecified number of Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles and Iskander-K cruise missiles and 269 strike (including 59 jet-powered) and decoy drones against Ukraine overnight on October 18 to 19. These strikes follow intense Russian drone strikes during the day on October 18, in which Russian forces launched 463 Shahed and Gerbera-type strike drones, Banderol/Dan-T and Italmas loitering munitions, and Parodiya-type decoy drones — likely in an effort to degrade Ukrainian air defenses in advance of the overnight strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on October 19 that Russian forces launched 16 ballistic missiles and over 200 drones (including jet-powered) primarily against Kyiv City and Kyiv Oblast overnight, damaging residential, critical, and transportation infrastructure. Russian forces also struck 28 substations and other energy infrastructure objects in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Kharkiv, Ternopil, Odesa, and Rivne oblasts, causing power outages for approximately 550,000 households in 15 oblasts across Ukraine. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky stated on October 17 that Russia has conducted daily strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure since mid-July 2026, totaling 2,147 strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities since July 16. Koretsky stated that Russian forces also struck a park with families in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv Oblast, during the day on October 19, killing at least six people, including two children, and injuring at least 14.
NEW: Ukrainian officials continue to report disruptions to US assistance to Ukraine. Other Key Takeaways: Devastating Russian drone and missile strikes on the night of October 18 to 19 heavily damaged energy and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine — killing at least four and wounding at least 55. Daytime Russian strikes are also inflicting significant civilian casualties. The Kremlin is reportedly pushing for a trilateral meeting between the United States, Russia, and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), likely as part of a dual-pronged effort to present itself as a diplomatic peer while supporting structures that challenge Western-led international organizations. Recent aggressive Russian military satellite maneuvers are a continuation of Russia’s space policy against third country satellites since at least 2022. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Lyman tactical area, east of Dobropillya, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Leaked documents expose a shadowy international network operating around Alexander Babakov, a sanctioned Kremlin power broker previously linked to the €9.4 million loan that helped finance Marine Le Pen’s Front National. A new investigation by @InformNapalm reveals how French national Geoffroy Doly became deeply embedded in Babakov’s inner circle, gaining direct Russian diplomatic support while developing corporate connections across France, Serbia, Russia and China. What the documents show: - Diplomatic correspondence in which Babakov personally steps in to arrange Doly’s visas. - Travel logs placing Doly with Babakov’s son, Mikhail, and with other people who have been around - Babakov for years, in several countries. -Corporate records linking Doly to businesses in France, Serbia, Russia and China. The revelations raise troubling questions about whether Western intermediaries are helping sanctioned Kremlin elites preserve their influence and power through corporate structures, diplomatic channels and cross-border business relationships. The ease with which a young French national has woven his career into the circle of a sanctioned Kremlin power broker exposes a dangerous blind spot in Western enforcement. The evidence points to an extensive system of relationships that warrants scrutiny for potential sanctions circumvention. Western governments sanctioned Babakov, but the network surrounding him appears to have remained alive. informnapalm.org/en/alexande…

After an initial broad sell-off, markets have started to differentiate among 🇪🇺 govts. Spreads widened again in 🇫🇷 & 🇧🇪, which has a weak backdrop, fractious politics and large consolidation needs, but shrank in South Europe. Bond market is back as the key constraint for govts.
The sell off in French govt debt is having ripple effects across other Euro sovereigns with spreads for other high debt countries rising. Here the chances of ECB leaning against it are higher than for France, perhaps starting with verbal interventions.

Russia’s military satellite Kosmos-2612 has maneuvered to within 26 meters of ICEYE-X36, a Finnish-American radar satellite whose imagery is supplied to Ukraine. Space analyst Georgy Trishkin said the near-zero relative speed could indicate an attempt to force ICEYE-X36 to make orbital corrections, potentially disrupting operations and using up its fuel. RAND researcher Michael Bohnert called the approach a show of force.

“According to Gallup, 66% of Ukrainians want the war to end through negotiations as soon as possible, up from 22% in 2022. The figure reflects a profound weariness with a war that has consumed lives, destroyed cities, and placed an intolerable burden on society; it does not, in itself, signify support for capitulation, abandoning Ukraine's sovereignty, or accepting Moscow's demands,” writes Liubov Tsybulska, director of Join Ukraine, in this op-ed. kyivindependent.com/how-russ…
