New York for the week 🗽
Will mostly be hanging out around @betaworks.
+ hosting an event for creative technologists on Thursday.
Looking forward to seeing new & old faces!
I brought together a group of creative technologists, designers, and builders in SF to explore "software as content" and push the boundaries of what software can be.
What if we made software the way we make videos, memes, or other creative media? To express ourselves, entertain, experiment.
We saw everything from a playful game made as a birthday gift with inside jokes, doodles coming alive and playing with each other, passion projects about meteorites and pets, creative 3D tools, a whimsical SimCity-meets-Ghibli version of San Francisco, and entirely new ways of interacting with computers.
I also gave everyone a first look at the new @getdiffer, where anyone can post, share, and remix software as easily as sharing content.
Some projects were personal, some artistic, some playful, and others pushed the boundaries of what an interface can be.
For us, software as content is an early expression of our broader vision for adaptive software: software that's personal, that can be shaped by anyone, and that evolves through the people who interact with it.
Huge thanks to everyone who demoed and joined us! ❤️

A brief demo & meditation on personal software I presented at a @getdiffer generative UI meetup last night
Anthropic is offering a 145k salary for a personal assistant in London.
Responsibilities include:
"Scheduling and managing calendars for leader(s) and their organization"
"Building and maintaining organizational systems for tracking and managing inbound requests"
"Managing the leader's inbox and communications with precise attention to detail"
"Handling travel logistics"
Somebody should really build some sort of tech tool that can handle this stuff autonomously.

My pal @iristenteije has been saying for a while that software is becoming more like content.
Here's what I think the 'software is dead' crowd are missing:
1. The internet commoditised the distribution of content. Suddenly, you didn't need the approval and distribution engine of a newspaper to have millions of people read what you wrote.
2. The same happened with software's distribution, but the barrier to entry was still higher than with content. People with no formal training can create a blog post in an hour that's consumed and enjoyed by thousands or more. Historically not true with software.
3. So as software gets easier and cheaper to make, there are imperfect, but useful analogies for what already happened in content, and what's happening now.
Some predictions:
- the number of people creating software will continue to explode.
- the amount of software (great, okay and bad) will grow accordingly, think 10,000x in a few years, but with similar ratios of each bucket as before.
- the business of software will change rapidly, in a similar fashion to content.
- lots more software will be free: as a funnel to something else, to build people's profiles, for the love of the game.
- people will still make plenty of money from directly monetising software, but it'll become increasingly important to (as @nikitabier) says, have one or more of these: network effects, proprietary data & physical components.
- I'd suggest tech commentators are underestimating the importance of brand/personality in this too. more influencers will run software companies.
- just having the greatest product/distribution/intensity will still matter though, whether you're monetising directly or not. the difference in output between a great person and good person is even wider post-AI than pre-AI.
- the number of people required to build useful software will keep shrinking. just like content creators are typically a single person, software products/companies will increasingly be a solopreneur or smaller team.
- the type of software that's built will drastically expand, as more people (and agents) participate and build for themselves and their people/ideas.
- finally, in the immortal words of @GRITCULT, things will get weirder.

Software doesn't have to look like an app.
We're celebrating software as a creative medium in SF (Oct 14) and NY (Oct 22). Come see and create 🎨
genuine q: i'd love to be able to just yap nonstop without thinking
how do you guys do it?
Everything can be an app now.
A joke. A gift for one friend. A social experiment.
Hosting a meet-up for people making software as a creative medium. Let's explore how far we can take it.

I'll be around the rest of the week too, so if you're building, creating or investing in this, let's grab a coffee ☕

🤖 Made with AI
The moat:
Be weird, unhinged, original. Human.
+ this is why @NoamTenne and I wanted to work with and love @betaworks 🙂

for mainstream consumer AI, i'm rather more bullish on vibe coded "media" than apps - motion graphics, movies, musically triggered visuals etc.
the type of trippy shit you might entertain yourself with at MOMA. things that stir up your emotion. things that make you feel things.
instagram's initial wedge was one tap filtered photos that made anyone feel like a professional photographer.

Went to "Software As Content" by the @getdiffer team and now I have a bunch of fun/weird little chorded musical toys: player.getdiffer.com/@ade as well as the feeling that we're not post-literacy but emerging into a world of new literacies and software may become media.
