I am deeply troubled by the detention of Nicaraguan journalist Luis Chavarría-Galeano by immigration authorities.
Chavarría-Galeano was forced into exile by the brutal Ortega-Murillo socialist dictatorship, which has persecuted journalists, jailed political opponents, and driven countless Nicaraguans into exile.
America must never lose sight of the difference between criminals and people fleeing political repression. We can and must enforce our immigration laws, while ensuring that those escaping socialist dictatorships are not sent back into the hands of repressive regimes.
The United States has long been a beacon of freedom for those persecuted by tyranny. We must uphold that tradition and ensure that Luis Chavarría-Galeano and other political exiles receive the protection and due process they deserve.
