In lieu of today's @bandcamp layoffs, I've gone ahead and removed the paywall from the 'Bandcamp Anxiety' essay I published via @_FirstFloor last week.
It seems that many of the worries I outlined in that piece are coming true even faster than I initially anticipated.
Beginning to seem like the only thing harder than building a stable, sustainable company without investors/overlords is building one with investors/overlords

artist-centric appears to steal meaningful income from poorer artists, and hand it to bigger artists, for whom it has no material impact. what am I missing

Every legitimate spin on Spotify "costs" them $ in the form of a royalty to catalogs/creators, but like every platform they are simultaneously desperate for engagement to prevent user loss.

The suggestions in this @musicbizworld op-ed don't add up to "an entirely new royalty model"... they're more like a wish list of improvements. Nevertheless! I'm onboard with everything in #1-4 (#5 has been tried and didn't work for good reasons)
