The first release for A Year in Abstract.
With a project this big, I wanted the first release to be special.
To me, βabstractβ means infinite possibilities, in life and in art, as long as we stay open and donβt take everything at face value. It has been my compass in recent years.
This image has been in my portfolio for a while. Itβs one of my favorite water abstracts, but it never had the right home. It didnβt fit any collection, and I didnβt want to release it as a random 1/1. It fits perfectly here, as the opening to this creative journey.

To 'win' paying from the start was 10-17eth (taxes + buyouts) to return +0.5-7.5eth and 1/1/69 citizen.

tonight, death and taxes ends.
a group of citizens organized. a large holder agreed to sacrifice four of their own citizens, 17 eth each. the group pooled the funds and bought the final four deaths. i didn't end the game. the citizens did. i can't imagine a better ending than that.
tonight the four are killed, the population reaches 69, and this phase of the game officially concludes.
now the important part, survivors:
your share of the treasury does not move on its own. claiming is a pull function. it does not happen automatically. you go to the site and you claim it yourself. there is exactly one place to do this: deptofdeath.xyz/irs. anyone who sends you anywhere else is trying to steal your hard earned eth.
the 69 will be paid exactly as written. that sentence has been on every surface of this project since the beginning. tonight it comes true.
i'm proud of what i built. the art, the strategy, the mechanics, the puzzles, the story. but, it also cost far more than i expected. it broke me emotionally. damaged relationships with people i genuinely care about. i said from the start that the tension and the discourse was part of the art. some days that was hard to believe.
thank you to everyone who played, watched, doubted, screamed, accused, and stayed. all of it was participation. all of it is in the work.
to the 69: you outlived a world. survived 201 grueling days. you will soon collect what the world owes you.
i'll have more to share later. still trying to process all of this. the subnet is coming. but for now i need a vacation.

Death & Taxes might actually be coming to an end
The remaining citizens (excluding Hed0 and Graveyard) have collectively come together with a plan to buy the final 4 citizens and end the game
At current prices, the split would be ~17.3 ETH per winner
Hed0 has agreed to 17 ETH each and will give the Governor + Evader to the group to auction off afterward
A pledge page was created to see who would be willing to contribute toward the buyout. In less than 24 hours, 47 of 56 eligible citizens have already pledged. At those numbers, the cost is only ~1.45 ETH per contributor
Now it comes down to the remaining 9
Do they join the other 47 and bring Death & Taxes to an end, or do they keep paying taxes until someone eventually folds?
Either way, feels like weβre getting close to finding out how this game ends
Today marks 6 months since Death & Taxes minted and what's happening in the game is actually WILD
The prize pool is at 1044ETH β 69 winners = 15e each
The floor is 10.5e, which sounds like a free 4.5e
But don't forget the increasing daily tax, which is over 0.12e per day
So you need to be able to stay alive longer than the next person, which is where things get interesting
There's currently 77 citizens still alive, meaning 8 more to go before the game ends
A majority of players have formed a group called "The Union 69" and work together to bribe players into giving up, audit players, etc.
There's 2 whales who operate outside of this group
The first is the_graveyard who holds 7 and has almost $1m liquid
The other is Hed0nist, who holds 6 split into multiple wallets
A tax-skip trick was discovered where players could avoid paying taxes every second day. This means a player who minted has paid over 10eth in taxes, while a tax-skipper could have paid around 5eth
Hed0nist discovered the trick and audits+skips taxes with his custom bot by pumping gas
The game has been going on for half a year and could technically go on forever, as long as 70 citizens are willing to pay their taxes
