Massive surprise when I found a Glanville Fritillary on the mainland at Southbourne Undercliff Dorset today.Probably one flying from the IOW in the hot settled conditions. My first mainland coastal record since Hordle Cliff and Hurst Spit. @savebutterflies @BC_Dorset @HantsIoWBC
My latest piece for the NS.

By rescuing British Steel, Keir Starmer has marked a turn against neoliberal complacency. This realism should guide his government from here on.

Arnside Knott is now the go-to place for Brown Hairstreak in the North and possibly the most reliable site anywhere in England for a good sighting. They (mostly males) spend most of the day nectaring on Hemp Agrimony and are very easy to find.

FIRST REPORT: Brown Hairstreak 13th July at @RSPBRainham, Essex. This is the best evidence yet that this species has successfully recolonised our region.

The Burnt-tip Orchids seem to be the star attraction at Martin Down at the moment but I was equally impressed by the number of Marsh Fritillary there today (counted 21). Bumped into @lynda_lambert again too😄
A phenomenal day, Julian. 25 Dukes (give or take one or two that might have been double counted) by my reckoning. Feels like the butterfly season is finally up and running. 👍 – at East, England

Butterflies seem thin on the ground so far (saw only 7 on my local transect yesterday in near perfect weather) but ticks are off and running. Just removed my first of the season which feels a bit earlier than usual. – at East, England

Because I am obsessed I returned to Ruislip this afternoon and was duly rewarded with 10 good sightings (all female). Seems to be a Brown Hairstreak season to remember. @Bc_HertsMiddx
The elusive Brown Hairstreak doesn’t seem so elusive at Stafford Road. Visited with my daughter this morning and saw 8 (including 4 females) in just over an hour @Bc_HertsMiddx
Wow! indeed.
Wow! 28 Brown Hairstreak on and after todays Herts & Middx Butterfly Conservation event at Ruislip Gardens in West London. They are having a good year - my best total for this species. Thanks Nick Furtek @Bc_HertsMiddx @savebutterflies @BigCButterflies
Chalkhill Blue numbers seem very low on Isle of Wight this week. Was it a very early emergence or have numbers crashed? @HantsIoWBC @RichardFoxBC – at South East, England
