Once you understand that things like this are not abnormal in software development the world becomes fucking terrifying.
Fallout 3's game engine didn't support vehicles, so the trains are actually just a hat worn by a character out of the frame, and now I know what my Halloween costume is gonna be next year

Since 2019 I’ve been in an expensive, stressful legal battle to protect Webcomic Name (my “oh no” comics). It’s a relief to finally talk about this publicly! I’m launching a crowdfunder to pay my remaining legal fees to end this. 1/8 gofund.me/7478032b

With Twitter's change in ownership last week, I'm probably in the clear to talk about the most unethical thing I was asked to build while working at Twitter. 🧵

Hello, it's Amazon here, you have one week to opt out of sharing your internet with everyone, but I'm sure you love this so why would you? Have a great day! theguardian.com/technology/2…

I was going to redact a PDF. On my Mac in Preview, I hit Markup, then chose a black rectangle and this popup appeared, effectively saying "hey, you might not want to do this". This is *exceptionally* good behavior. (I also didn't know there was a Redact tool!)

Did you know? When forecasting ice accretion (accumulation), it's for flat surfaces. But, ice accumulates differently on radial surfaces (wires/branches). Here is a conversion table, flat surface accumulation to radial accumulation. We hope you find this helpful #MAwx #CTwx #RIwx

Updated chart (V1.1): Added a few more that people threw into the comments and corrected a mixup between Danish/Dutch (sorry!).

A lot of people were quick to assume that ransomware caused the death when this first came out, but it was always an open question - even in first news reports - about whether there was a connection between the two. Please update those slides in your conference presentations 😉

It is unusual to find a fully instrumented weather station which experienced a hurricane eyewall passage. It's like out of a textbook.

1/ I spent a bit of time looking at the Canada COVID Alert app this evening. Bottom line: this app is pretty much the model for how to do this kind of tech.

This situation—a single company controlling web standards—is what everyone freaked out about in the Windows 95 era, but the emergence of Google as de facto regulatory authority for the web doesn't seem to rankle people as much as it should.
Realistically, I think that we are headed to a single engine world based on Chromium. The only thing preventing this is Apple’s requirement for WebKit on iOS.

The stupidest way movies get jarringly ruined for me is when they use a sound effect of a dial tone to indicate that the called party has hung up. That's not how it worked, damn it!

This is my favorite bit of early-UNIX history trivia: When AT&T donated the V6 source code to Berkeley, it was classified as industrial waste for tax purposes.
