The irony is that saying sorry is what Christian leadership should look like. Couldn’t be prouder of @AndyByfield_22 but so sad that it was impossible for us to continue.

Gisèle Pelicot on the teenage rape controversy: “You’ve got to judge those who are accused according to the crime they've committed, and not let them go free just because they're minors.” Full interview and further discussion on my show at 7. Link 👇
"We're still living with male domination"
Gisele Pelicot spoke to @cathynewman about two teenage boys spared jail in rape cases in the UK.

Machen = duct tape. Brilliant!
German grammar is strict about almost everything.
But then there's "machen." 🇩🇪
This verb is basically the duct tape of the German language. When your brain freezes mid-sentence and the perfect verb won't come, machen is always there.
Fotos machen ➖ take photos
Hausaufgaben machen ➖ do homework
Pause machen ➖ take a break
Spaß machen ➖ be fun / to be enjoyable
Sorgen machen ➖ to worry
It’s not fancy or advanced German, just one of those words that actually saves you in real conversations when your brain goes blank.
Don't let perfectionism kill your momentum today.
Always say something, use machen and keep it going.
𝘞𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯. 🇩🇪
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 🇩🇪

AYK some us tried that- the result was that we were damned from one of the most prominent pulpits in England. That was highly intention & never retracted. So it shaped & permitted the non-responses that followed. Here: soulinformation.org/iagstate… And here: soulinformation.org/blog/dea…

Wonderful to see the inspirational Gisèle Pelicot in conversation with Helena Kennedy at the Hay Festival. The whole audience rose to their feet as soon as Gislèle came onto the stage.

You're experiencing a lack of autonomy and agency from those you used to share this same lack with. Once shoved, or move away you realise your connection was built on 'receivership' and 'followship' not 'fellowship' and a flourishing community. This is the core of evangelicalism

Why is is so hard to say sorry? And why is it so hard for survivors when there is silence?

@AnglicanFutures gave notice of this post to Emmanual Church, Wimbledon, where Jonathan Fletcher was long-term vicar so they could address criticisms of their statement if they wished. Over a week later- no response public or private. Is this acceptable? anglicanfutures.org/post/hav…

An Afghan woman in her own words, from my online group this morning. . 'women who fight like lions and live like shadows in the dark.'
Thoroughly recommend these programmes for anyone looking to understand boarding school syndrome and its links to #fletcherculture
Cannot thank @NickyAACampbell enough for his brave work - shining a light in the darkest places.

Ah no, not re-traumatising. We value the work of GRACE very highly. Almost feels like a different life now those months/years we spent trying to raise concerns & propose healthier ways forward. I'm glad we tried atleast.

Oh boy. When they are saying 'there's no cover up' and literally covering things up...
Having hopped back on Twitter to follow this and what is happening with Dane Ortlund (sadly similar patterns) I'm now seeing things on Josh Howerton... it's all the same story.

Still thinking about what an act of generosity it is to read something well. With this review, and a few times since the book came out, I've been quite amazed by the gift of someone's time, attention and intelligence. Feels like the generosity of reading is maybe underrated
Fantastic review this morning in @ChurchTimes -- I'm very grateful churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2…

You are so kind. It wasn't complicated back then & isn't complicated now. We don't teach people the Bible because we love the Bible. We teach people the Bible because we love people. All we have to do is do the latter as best as the charis granted to us allows.

So very sorry Andy.
I can’t bring myself to “like” this as it is the wrong response to your openness about such a huge betrayal but I want you to know you both have our support & prayers

"... the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal." That's heartbreaking. It makes me so cross at those who repeatedly minimised Jonathan Fletcher’s abuse because 'it wasn't as bad as' wasn't 'criminal', '...needed to be seen in context' etc when it was so 'destructive'.
Seems right to repost this as it was the first time I heard a married couple articulate the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal.
Thank you again @matt_redman and Beth Redman for your bravery, truth and light.

Today sees the release of ‘Let There Be Light’ - a documentary exploring the pattern of harmful behaviours experienced under the leadership of Mike Pilavachi, a prominent figure in the UK Church. Our hope is for this film to be something of a care-package for the hurting, at the same time asking how we might become a healthier Church in the future. We know it won’t serve everyone, but we pray it will help some.
We tell our story to shine light and help validate other’s experiences. It would have been much easier to say nothing - but a culture of silence up until now has been a significant force. Other voices speaking into this documentary are Dr Diane Langberg (recognised for her 50 years of clinical work with trauma victims), Dr Chi-Chi Obuaya (a respected London Harley Street consultant psychiatrist) and Dr Amy Orr-Ewing (a regarded UK theologian with a passion to advocate for survivors of abuse.) The film also points to some key organisations who provide support in this area and also safeguarding resources for churches.
While speaking on a painful subject it’s also important to acknowledge all of the pastors out there faithfully loving those that God has entrusted to them.
This is a story Beth and I chose to tell. Our prayer is for the healing of yesterday’s wounds and a brighter, safer Church tomorrow.
Let there be Light.

To speak is difficult- once it's admitted that sacred cows are actually golden calves all control is lost & all things are up for grabs. To speak means admitting what's been hidden, bad judgements etc. That should be possible but too many 'leaders' don't have the emotional range
