There are many claims for the oldest pub in Britain. The most famous is the Trip to Jerusalem at Nottingham: reputedly opened 1189, but this was invented in 1909 by the landlord. In reality its a 17thC building that was used as a pub by 1751. So which is the oldest? ...a thread🧵

1. 🧵 I'm in court today. Why? Because I'm not pretending anymore. And if you stop pretending that's what happens to you.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski @RadoslawSikorski spoke at the UN Security Council on Ukraine yesterday. He devoted his speech to challenging claims made at the forum by Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia that his country is the victim of aggressive Western policies. Thank you!

If a train conductor asks me for my ticket I always spend as long as possible trying to find it in my bag, but somehow always manage to find it in my wallet just as they're about to issue the fine. It is wonderful to watch them climb down from their high horse.

'Greenland losing 30m tonnes of ice an hour, study reveals' This article is published under the category of "ice" which is like putting world war one under the category "guns." "additional source of freshwater ... might mean ... severe consequences for humanity" "additional use of guns might mean severe consequences for humanity" What the fuck do you mean by "severe consequences for humanity" @dpcarrington? Why aren't you telling people that no AMOC means 3-8C reduction in UK temperature overnight? xitter.cf/rahmstorf/status/16569… Why the fuck don't you have an agricultural expert telling people this means half the UK population will starve and the rest will have to migrate? Like Gaza but going on forever. As a campaigner I am doing my fucking job - as a journalist you do your fucking job. theguardian.com/environment/…
What would happen if there's 2.5 °C global warming, and the overturning circulation of the Atlantic (#AMOC) shuts down? The recent OECD report "Climate Tipping Points" has this interesting graph of the temperature and precipitation effects: 1. Major Northern Hemisphere cooling...

Tomorrow, a crucial piece of legislation around healthcare will be scrutinised by MPs. It will happen in a committee room, away from the main chambers, on a whisper. If it passes, it will worsen the health of the UK population. Did you know about it? No? A thread 🧵

Containers work at the operating system level. It gives you multiple virtual operating systems that all run on a single real OS. So you can run multiple programs inside separate virtual operating systems, using a single real host operating system and kernel.

The upshot of this is that containers are much "cheaper" than VMs. You can start one up in milliseconds, and you can run hundreds on the same machine.

Conceptually, "regular" virtualization works at the hardware level, it gives you multiple virtual machines (VMs) that pretend to be physical computers, on a single real machine. So you can run multiple operating systems inside separate VMs on the same physical box.

But VMs can be fiddly to set up! And nowadays, thanks to containerization, we can do better. Because containerization is a kind of even-more-virtual virtualization.

So when you come to deploy your code to a real server in a datacentre, it will be using virtualization. And actually you can use virtualization on your own machine, with software like Virtualbox or KVM.
