ALT Together, we mourn design—killed, according to X, approximately 847 times this year alone. And yet, no matter how many times we declare design is dead, it is alive. Design is everywhere, quietly thriving in the clarity of the subway map when you fear you have missed your stop, in the legibility of the dinner menu even when you aren't sure if sorrel is a vegetable or a new pasta shape, and in the dopamine-releasing notification that a meeting has been cancelled. Design doesn't die. It is not a trend to be disrupted or a technology to be replaced. It's the difference between caring about how something makes you feel, not just if it works. So here's to design—endlessly declared gone, endlessly proving everyone wrong.

"All of us at Bookworm deeply mourn the passing of Shri KKS Murthy of Select Bookshop. We always admired his love for books and his work ethic. He was not just a legend among Bengaluru's and India's bibliophiles but also our well-wisher and an inspiration. We pray for the departed soul. Om Shanti." – Krishna Gowda

I'm talking at a conference later this year (on UX+AI).
I just saw an ad for the conference with my photo and was like, wait, that doesn't look right.
Is my bra showing in my profile pic and I've never noticed...? That's weird.
I open my original photo.
No bra showing.
I put the two photos side by side and I'm like WTF...
Someone edited my photo to unbutton my blouse and reveal a made-up hint of a bra or something else underneath. 🤨
Immediately, I email the conference host.
(FYI he is a great, respectable guy with 5 kids at home.)
He is super apologetic and immediately looks into the issue.
He quickly reports back that the woman running their social media used a cropped square image from their website.
She needed it to be more vertical, so she used an AI expand image tool to make the photo taller.
AI invented the bottom part of the image (in which it believed that women's shirts should be unbuttoned further, with some tension around the buttons, and revealing a little hint of something underneath). 🤯

FYI the conference organizers were super apologetic and took down all of the content with that photo.

Indians working in the US are in a living nightmare now.
Every 3yrs on an H-1B visa, you need to go back home and get it renewed. For the last few months, there are ZERO days open for people to get their visa stamped.
They're jailed in the US, and can't leave to see family

As far as I can tell, one of the biggest changes across organizations over the past few years is simply the rise of distraction. The default often appears to be a kind of continuous partial attention. I'm not sure whether it's good or bad. Maybe people were suboptimally stuck before, and perhaps there are gains to being able to allocate attention more flexibly? Or maybe it's bad because meetings become even less efficient and our ability to focus (already under assault!) withers further. Either way, it's a striking new normal.

File over app
File over app is a philosophy: if you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Use tools that give you this freedom.
File over app is an appeal to tool makers: accept that all software is ephemeral, and give people ownership over their data.
In the fullness of time, the files you create are more important than the tools you use to create them. Apps are ephemeral, but your files have a chance to last.
The pyramids of Egypt contain hieroglyphs that were chiseled in stone thousands of years ago. The ideas hieroglyphs convey are more important than the type of chisel that was used to carve them.
The world is filled with ideas from generations past, transmitted through many mediums, from clay tablets to manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. These artifacts are objects that you can touch, hold, own, store, preserve, and look at. To read something written on paper all you need is eyeballs.
Today, we are creating innumerable digital artifacts, but most of these artifacts are out of our control. They are stored on servers, in databases, gated behind an internet connection, and login to a cloud service. Even the files on your hard drive use proprietary formats that make them incompatible with older systems.
Paraphrasing something I wrote recently:
> If you want your writing to still be readable on a computer from the 2060s or 2160s, it’s important that your notes can be read on a computer from the 1960s.
You should want the files you create to be durable, not only for posterity, but also for your future self. You never know when you might want to go back to something you created years or decades ago. Don’t lock your data into a format you can’t retrieve.
These days I write using an app I help make called Obsidian (@obsdmd), but it’s a delusion to think it will last forever. The app will eventually become obsolete. It’s the plain text files I create that are designed to last. Who knows if anyone will want to read them besides me, but future me is enough of an audience to make it worthwhile.

Humbled to announce the successful completion of our first flight - Mission 01 of Agnibaan SOrTeD - from our own and India’s first & only private Launchpad within SDSC-SHAR at Sriharikota. All the mission objectives of this controlled vertical ascent flight were met and performance was nominal. The vehicle was completely designed in-house and was powered by the world’s first single piece 3d printed engine and also happens to be India’s first flight with a semi cryo engine. Our greatest thanks to @INSPACeIND @isro @iitmadras & our incredibly committed team in helping us prove that a private player can design and fly original space tech hardware in India. #madeInIndiaForTheWorld

Heartbreaking News!
Probably the most stylish filmmaker we have had from the early 90s, who fascinated all of us with the technical prowess, fantastic narratives, amazing music, excellent comedy, spectacular action and brilliant performances of his short but excellent filmography in Malayalam, with each of his films being embedded in our minds forever. Which Malayali would go through a day or a week, without referring to at least one dialogue from our all time classic, #Yoddha? All of us probably would have lost count of how many times we've seen Yoddha, along with Nirnayam and Gandharvam too.
Had met him through Facebook as a fan, had the chance to meet him in Bombay while doing my course in Pune and he had entrusted me with adapting a screenplay which he wanted to produce in Malayalam. Probably my first writing assignment. I couldn't believe that such a legendary director would give a novice like me such an opportunity. That project didn't materialize, but we had been in touch for such a long time, and he had always been warm, kind and so supportive to me. So, it's a grave loss personally too.
He presented Mohanlal the most stylishly on screen, juicing out all the superstardom from him - be it action, comedy, dance, drama and what not, and presented them in the most grand and stylish manner. He brought A.R. Rahman to Malayalam cinema for the first time and gave us the unforgettable songs and background score of #Yoddha, that could give many modern blockbusters a run for their money even today. He adapted some kickass Hollywood actioners and gave Malayalis some never-before seen experiences. He made some very cool and quirky entertainers in Hindi which turned out to be blockbusters, establishing the careers of many Bollywood actors. We always wanted him to return to directing in Malayalam, but I guess that was not meant to be.
We have lost a true visionary. Condolences to Ma'am, Sajna, Shantanu, Santosh Sir, and his whole family.
Rest in power, @sangeethsivan Sir.
