🧵 Thread | 🇷🇺 RUSSIA’S MISSILE ARSENAL
Three missiles. Three very different weapons. In this thread, we look inside the 3M22 Zircon, Iskander-M and Oreshnik, how they work, what they were designed to do, how Russia has used them in Ukraine, and which actually matter most on the battlefield.
Today’s attack on Kyiv provides a good reason to compare them. Ukraine says it destroyed all three missiles launched from Kursk Oblast overnight, but there is disagreement over exactly what Russia fired. The Ukrainian Air Force recorded one Zircon/Oniks and two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles. @AMK_Mapping_ assesses that all three were Oniks and says three Patriot PAC-3 interceptors destroyed them sequentially.
The interceptions are confirmed by Ukraine. The precise composition of the salvo, and AMK’s reported three-interceptor engagement, is not.
So what exactly separates these weapons?
3M22 Zircon, hypersonic cruise missile.
Iskander-M, short-range ballistic missile.
Oreshnik, intermediate-range ballistic missile.
Three systems built for very different missions, and used very differently in this war.
2/4 ⬇️
🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Ukraine says it intercepted all three Russian missiles launched from Kursk Oblast toward Kyiv overnight. If AMK Mapping’s more specific account is correct, the engagement was even cleaner: three incoming Oniks missiles, three Patriot PAC-3 interceptors fired, three kills.
Ukraine’s Air Force officially recorded one missile classified as a Zircon/Oniks and two as Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles. All three were reported destroyed.
AMK Mapping gives a different identification of the salvo. It says Russia launched three Oniks supersonic cruise missiles from near Fatezh in Kursk Oblast and that they were intercepted sequentially as they approached Kyiv. According to him, Ukrainian Patriot batteries fired exactly three PAC-3 interceptors to destroy the three incoming missiles, effectively one interceptor for each target.
The 3-for-3 result is therefore supported by the Ukrainian Air Force. The unusually efficient three PAC-3s for three interceptions, however, rests on AMK’s account: Ukraine has not publicly confirmed either that all three incoming weapons were Oniks or the number and type of Patriot interceptors expended.
