Our appreciation in Diabetologia of Steve Ashcroft who sadly passed away in November. Steve made fundamental contributions to our understanding of beta cell glucose sensing including the substrate site hypothesis and the role of KATP channels.

Not one, but TWO endocrinologists to join the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2026. Both Drs Hegele and Zinman have changed the way we treat metabolic disorders forever. In addition though … they are just kind humans. Congratulations!!🎉🎊🎈

Important new review from my @CRCHUM colleague #MarcDonath
Inflammation is a key driver of the pathophysiology of cardiometabolic disorders #obesity #T2D and new metabolic medicines based on GLP-1 action exert their magic in part by reducing inflammation. A new review from Professor Donath summarizes the field sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

I‑BET151 modulates glucokinase gene expression and beta cellfunction in part through changes in FOXO1 expression rdcu.be/eIBCo Assoc. Prof Yusuf Ali's team @NTU_LKCMedicine in collaboration with @guy_rutter and @astar_research discovered that BET protein inhibition (I-BET151) impacts pancreatic β-cell function. 🔹 ↑ Glucose excursions 🔹 ↓ Insulin response 🔹 Downregulation of MODY genes (Hnf4α, Gck, Hnf1α, Glut2) & PI3K–Akt pathway ⚠️ BET therapies may impair β-cell health — caution warranted. #Diabetes #Epigenetics #BETinhibition

All true. But the same rigour should be applied to ALL the antibodies we use. Those against glucokinase are a case in point.
In some of these papers, glp1r detection is a small element. In others it's a large element. Don't trust antibody vendors, and do the legwork. As a field we are always happy to provide reagents/models to help with validation.

Thanks again @SoleimanpourLab for the opportunity to be involved and to #MarieGasser for her vital input! Also grateful to the ever-resourceful @carapetop for her help!
P.S. we would be remiss if we did not also thank the amazing reviewers and editor who made our work better and more complete. As well as @cevansmo for the lovely commentary on our work! nature.com/articles/s42255-0…
