Thanks for the interest. Fingers crossed we are reprinting it next year! (20th anniversary)
Shanghai interiors. 2001-2002.
Early 20th century buildings all over the city were being demolished during this period (late 90s, early 2000s). Entire neighborhoods even. And you couldn’t help but feel a sense of loss about it. But at the same time you knew it was all an accident that the early 20th century city had been preserved as long as it had. When China removed itself from the capitalistic grid following Mao’s victory in 1949, in the decades that followed the surface of Shanghai looked pretty much as it did in 1949, apart from the renamed streets and the odd Soviet inspired addition to the low-rise cityscape. When I moved to Shanghai in 1998 at first I photographed the exteriors but soon started trying to get inside buildings and homes to show what it was like to live in a place built for one family but shared between 5 or 10 households or more. This multi year exercise turned into the book “Phantom Shanghai”, first published in 2007. The project really took off when I started working with Emily Chen to help me get inside the homes of her fellow Shanghainese. Thanks Emily! @emilyleechen
