The diagram is good. I like it too. A person is not one coherent will, and what we call "I" is mostly a narrator that explains afterwards what the whole body already did. Granted. But I read the article behind it, and I do not think it is excellent. Here is why. 1. It never says which freedom. Freedom from interference and freedom as capacity, money and options are different things. The essay puts all of it in one word and then wants to "maximize" it. Freedom from interference cannot be maximized. It can only be left alone. Capacity can be maximized, but only by taking from one person to give to another. And once you sum "net freedom" over people, somebody has to do the counting and the distributing. 2. It mixes levels. A description of neurons is used to weaken consent at the level of a person. Society works only when we hold whole persons responsible for what they do, inconsistent or not. Who steers the narrator is a koan, not an argument. 3. Consent is never complete because no communication is complete. True, and old. It is no reason for a new ethics. 4. The cheating example is about a broken promise. Being with someone rests on a promise, said out loud or not. You do not need a theory of autonomy to see what went wrong there. 5. "A world of pure autonomy is a world where nobody cares" does not follow. Autonomy says who decides. It says nothing about what people care about. 6. Social pressure without aggression is not coercion. Pressure is felt individually. You can apply it and nobody feels it, and you can apply none and someone still does. Guilt cannot be built on a feeling. 7. It says communities do not exist, only networks. A connection that lasts a whole life is a community. The word was fine. 8. It counts emotional harm as violence. But almost everything changes the brain, refusing someone food too. A criterion that covers everything separates nothing, and the honest end of that road is paralysis. And calling my feelings your violence hands you power over me. If aggression covers the whole emotional spectrum, everybody has power over everybody, and "the total abolition of coercive power" at the end of the essay eats itself. 9. Then a footnote decides whose consent does not count, because "net freedom" wins. So the essay keeps the right to override consent for itself. 10. The practical list at the end is good: repeated interactions, reputation, transparency, freedom to leave. This is the free market, and it was there before the essay. The rest is a call for more difficult conversations. So what does it decide differently in a concrete case? I could not find anything. Sensitivity without a rule ends in paralysis or in arbitrary judgment. The best part for me is the small story about the flu. The conclusion there is: ask for what you need and trust people to set their own boundaries. That is taking responsibility for your own feelings. I would start the whole essay from there.
I still remember seeing this diagram in 2018 and having my mind blown permanently

Starlink is licensed in over 165 countries and has spent five years complying with every single law and requirement of the government of India, so why still no license? Is Ambani the real boss of India?
The government is more interested in protecting the interests of crony capitalists than of citizens

About once every 175 years, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune line up so one probe can swing past all four. The window was open in the 1970s and we used it. Neptune came in twelve years instead of thirty. youtube.com/@worth_inheritin…

Zauważyliście do czego zwolennicy poboru sprowadzają większość swoich "argumentów"? 1. Zastraszania - apokaliptycznych wizji bezpośredniej, totalnej, intensywnej wojny z Rosją, które mają zamknąć dyskusję o alternatywach. 2. Szantażu - gróźb odebrania przeciwnikom poboru konstytucyjnych praw i wolności. 3.

The Voyager golden record tells a stranger how fast to spin it without using a single word. The speed is engraved on the cover in units of the hydrogen atom, a clock that runs the same anywhere in the universe.

Röntgen's first X-ray of a person was his wife's hand, the ring sitting on the bone. Seventy-seven years later the same idea was checking our luggage, and a discovery still does not know what it is for. youtube.com/@worth_inheritin…

Voyager 2 left first. Voyager 1 left two weeks later on a faster road and overtook it. Both carried music from 1720 on the newest machine we could build. We put the museum on the rocket, and I think that is the right way round.

We live in an era where everything has been reduced to 15-second loops and instant gratification. The "speed up x2" button has become our default setting for navigating the world. In this reality, picking up a book is the most rebellious act you can commit. It is a conscious surrender - letting someone else lead you through a story at their own pace. No "skip intro" button, no skipping the slow parts, no algorithm feeding you the next hit of dopamine. A book is perhaps the only place left where slowing down to zero isn't a waste of time, but the only way to accelerate inside your own head. Leave your phone in the other room. Let yourself get locked inside someone else's thoughts. A luxury we are increasingly forgetting how to afford. #books #booktwt #readingcommunity #twitteroweksiążkary

The farthest thing we have ever made runs on about 68 kilobytes of memory, less than one holiday photo on your phone. It is more than 25 billion kilometres away, and it carries Bach, Chuck Berry and a kiss. youtube.com/@worth_inheritin…

Near the end of the Voyager golden record are the brainwaves of Ann Druyan, recorded two days after she and Carl Sagan decided to marry. Nobody can decode them. Somewhere past the planets there is still a recording of a woman in love. youtube.com/@worth_inheritin…

NASA had a photograph of a naked man and woman ready for the golden record. It stayed home, and only their silhouette flew. For a first meeting with strangers, that may just be good manners.

a stopped factory goes to the supreme court, and dangote shrugs. where permits are political, the highest court becomes the planning office. he prices it in. everyone else pays it in delay.
Aliko Dangote, responding to the report that a Kenyan court has ordered a halt to construction, says this is normal in Africa and they don’t care, adding that this is a small issue. “In Senegal, they stopped our factory. We went to the Supreme Court… anyone who wants to cause trouble, we are ready,” he says.

Can't believe it only cost $15B to become an interplanetary civilization That's like 60 miles of California high speed rail costs with Decel bureaucracy This is why Elon is GOATed. Efficient capital allocation towards creating civilizational value
