I smoked for 40 yrs, 10 yrs cigarette free by switching to vaping. No one should have the right to tell me *how* to quit. The fact is I quit.

All my smoking life I was told to quit. I did. Apparently "they" don't like *how* I quit. We have the right to access harm reduction. #WVD2021

I am positively giddy to report that consumer voices are vital to the decision making process at the FDA CTP, and yes, there are exceptional people on both sides of the issue, who value lived experience and genuinely want to listen. And there it is.
I believe Dr. Brett Koplow genuinely wants to listen to, and consider different perspectives from all sides of this debate. Many thanks to Cliff @cdoug for sharing this clip from our reactors panel. NB: The captions are a bit off.

@RushmoreExt23 at @foodanddruglaw: It's also important to correct misperceptions in adults who do not smoke because they might be discouraging loved ones who do smoke from trying a safer product.

One more time for those in the back! Other countries like Sweden embrace a harm reduction approach to quitting smoking and have seen great success - why can't Canada look to what's working?

"People were encouraged to give up smoking for better health and now the government are penalising us for doing it." Feeling punished for switching was one of the biggest themes in the comments.

Governments should not use smoking cessation tools as a revenue source. Making money off of smokers trying to quit is profoundly unethical.
"...The Government needs to change course before this miscalculation sends the UK’s smokefree ambitions up in smoke." With the Vaping Products Duty coming into force from today, our Director General John Dunne said: “This is nothing short of a tax on public health. If we want to talk about duty, how about the Government’s duty to protect a product that has helped millions of adults cut down on or stop smoking, rather than imposing a new tax that will increase the cost of that same product by as much as 264%? “Worse still, our survey of almost 3,500 adult vapers found the average e-liquid consumption is more than twice the figure HMRC used to model the duty, meaning the rate could have been significantly lower and still met the Government’s revenue target. Instead, millions of adults are being asked to pay more. “Our survey also showed around 50% of vapers would turn back to smoking or to the black market once the duty comes into play, while fresh analysis from the Centre for Economics and Business Research estimates that it could see 946,000 vapers and dual users switch exclusively to smoking, 1.5 billion additional cigarettes smoked each year and £306.6m in additional healthcare and productivity costs. “Protecting young people is essential. But that means stronger enforcement against illegal and rogue traders, not making legal vaping more expensive for adults trying to stay away from cigarettes. That’s why we’re calling for a Fair Deal for Vaping which includes action against the illicit market. The Government needs to look at the evidence and be prepared to change course before this miscalculation sends the UK’s smokefree ambitions up in smoke.” Learn more about our Fair Deal for Vaping plan: c.org/psWSQyHHN2 Read the Cebr report (commissioned by Vape Club): vapeclub.co.uk/how-to-vape-g… Find out more about our survey: ukvia.co.uk/vapers-blindside…

Make this make sense @MarjoriePLC and @GovCanHealth. We can buy cigarettes almost anywhere! So why is it so hard for adults to access lower-risk nicotine products? and why is HC and the Minister looking the other way while the illegal market fills the gap?

The real stakeholders are the 890 million adults who still smoke deadly cigarettes and 200 million who have quit smoking by what old-school Tobacco Control thinks is “the wrong way.” @WHO stigmatizes the 1st and conveniently assumes that all the 2nd are “industry influenced.”
"Stakeholders without a stake" - my take on the questionable stakeholder legitimacy of tobacco control activists and the arrogance of dismissing consumers' insights. Consumers are the stakeholders with the greatest stake.
