Good economics should reach beyond people who have time to read the full paper. @lehanzhang_ built a beautiful interactive guide to our study of how poliricians polarize the public debates following mass shootings.

And Professor Gabrielle Gratton turns the spotlight on the vast sums of money flowing in to politics — and the almost complete absence of research into its impact on our democracy…

I picked the wrong subfield of political economy. Documenting corruption doesn't feel relevant. What we need to know is why nobody cares.

Ariell Reshef and I have a new draft out. It is a paper about one figure. From 1850-1970 the employment share of legal services is constant. Between 1970-1990 it doubles, and then stabilizes at the new, higher, level. Lawyers' relative wages exhibit the same trend. What happened?
Thank you to Cosa Fanno Gli Economisti and @mlemoglie for this fantastic video coverage (*in Italian) of our 2021 AER paper "From Weber to Kafka: Political Instability and the Overproduction of Laws".

1/ While many non-political-scientists look askance at political parties, the pol sci literature regards them as vital for making democracies in large societies work. Let me explain why in this 🧵.
First things first: How do we define political parties?

This is a great thread. The political economy literature coming from economists (including myself) definitely understudy the role of parties and political party leaders and party elites
Maybe some are a little late? If you come @ElliotMotte’s talk this Wednesday you can have your say.
🎉Persuasion often happens privately, behind closed doors, but its influence spreads via examples to larger networks and markets. So how should one optimally customize private communication behind closed doors? And who should one choose to target to influence a larger market? 1/3

2/3 Christopher Teh, @djthornton97 and I propose a theoretical framework to answer these questions and show how optimal targeted persuasion depends on the distribution of market influence among potential targets.
3/3 Special thanks to @SNageebAli and 3 anonymous referees for their tremendous and timely feedback on earlier versions of the manuscript!
