Schooling for a world that no longer exists is a scam.
Educating for the future is hard to predict.
The answer has always been to educate the individual to become inspired, resilient, self-confident, and self-aware, so that he or she creates the future by design.

If our assessment practices decrease potential future learning, we need to question them.
If our assessment practices decrease the motivation a student has, we need to question them.
If our assessment practices dehumanize the students we serve, we need to question them.

Let's call the bluff.
Let's put the cards on the table.
I suspect the "college-requires-grades" card isn't the ace in the hole that many believe it to be.
Let's quit using grades.
Colleges will adapt.
They'll have to.
They need the money.
Time to shuffle the deck.

I'm hoping that ChatGPT will invigorate the conversation about going gradeless. Ts and Ss can use it as an exciting tool, without worrying about "cheating" when grades are not the goal, but learning is. I talk about it here: tinyurl.com/AIonOE1

Artificial Intelligence will play a large role in our young peoples' future - it must also be a part of the classroom today.
When kids cheat it is because we have taught them grades outweigh the importance of knowing things.

In an entirely unpredictable turn of events, ChatGPT has reinforced everything I already believed about education

I tried to have it give me a schedule for attending to 35 Ss in a 100min block in which I instruct, assess, care for emotional/physical needs, maintain a learning space, and complete clerical tasks such as attendance and responding promptly to emails.
I think I broke it. 🫠

This is a great article about using ChatGPT as an educator, focusing on integrating with teaching.

As 2023 begins, it's time to remind people that the only two countries in the world with for-profit cash bail industries are the U.S. and the Philippines. Only in those two places do companies make billions of dollars from a system of mass detention of presumed innocent people.

If you're worried about students using #ChatGPT for an assignment. Maybe you should be worried about the assignment instead.

Kids who are going to “cheat” are going to do it regardless of the tool. Excel can do math, Alexa and Google can write essays… There are tools for all kinds of “cheating”
#ChatGPT isn’t the problem. Meaningless assessment is the problem.

Ungrading asks hard questions—draws together students and teachers in conversation about the history of grades, how grades make meaning, harm grades do. Ungrading does not, should not, call out, shame, or blame individual teachers for problems that are structural and systemic.

Schools need to be different in the age of #AI. If “un-Google-able” questions was the challenge of assessment in the past, now it is anything an artificial intelligence engine can spit out. Technology has been changing education for decades. Calculators, word processors, spellcheck, the internet, citation generators, cell phones…Let’s stop being terrified by every new development and realize that we, like our students, have to adapt to an ever-changing world.
