Very disturbing that a number of human rights organisations, including the National Coalition for Human Rights Defenders @NCHRD_UG, Chapter Four Uganda @chapterfourug, Alliance for Election Finance Monitoring @AcfimAfrica, Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda @HRNJUganda & the National NGO Forum @ngoforum have all been ordered by the NGO Bureau @NGObureau to suspend their activities. This is an extremely worrying development ahead of Thursday’s elections; the suspension must be lifted immediately. @geneva_uganda @UgandaMFA

ALT Screenshot of an official letter from Uganda’s National Bureau for NGOs dated 9 January 2026, titled “Notice of Suspension of the NGO Permit for National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders in Uganda.” The letter states that the organisation’s permit is suspended and orders it to cease all operations with immediate effect, citing alleged national security concerns.
GNDEM condemns further repression of civil society in Uganda ahead of elections, as several prominent election monitoring and human rights NGOs, including GNDEM members, are suspended by the government.

UPDATE: Dr. Bireete is being held until January 21, a week after the Uganda general elections. This arrest undermines transparency in the upcoming elections, and is part of a broader pattern of intimidation of civil society and human rights defenders in the country.
Bail application for Sarah Bireete to be responded to on 21st January 2026 as she is kept on remand.
