Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act it's illegal for people to kill protected species of birds like this northern flicker, and people should be held responsible when their pets do it too, just like when pets cause other kinds of damage.

back in my day an arborist coworker would just find a nearby tree that needed to come down, fell and limb it, and use that to slowly nudge the cat out the other side

I would pay literally $1,000 right now right this second to know what was said here. I would shave my head. I would fast for a week. I would give up sex for a year.
Would you lie to this man?

A few readers have taken me to task for “missing the point of the film,” which is apparently that Elizabeth Holmes is unknowable and everything is ambiguous. Here’s my response: She went after Tyler Shultz and Erika Cheung with everything she had. I was threatened with litigation on a daily basis for months on end. It was a ruthless cover-up of a breathtaking fraud, and she was at the controls. Just a little context for those who have forgotten or didn’t follow the original story. By the way, I loved the film. #BestPicture, IMO.

Counterpoint: the profound and enduring unknowability of other people’s interiority is a large part of what makes life interesting and art beautiful

Elizabeth Holmes pursues honesty through pathological lying, total power over her own narrative by manipulating men by letting them rob her of her own voice. in the end, she is content to have “won” on her terms; only one person in the entire film can see that she has still lost.

insane slight of hand here where they casually explain that the units fell into intense disrepair in the first place because “they had tenants living in them for decades” who “left them in need of repairs” as if it wasn’t the landlords’ job to maintain them in the first place
These NYC apartments are standing empty, not because the owners don't want to rent them, but because rent stabilization laws prohibit them from charging enough to earn back the costs of necessary repairs.
