We’re delighted to welcome three new fellows to the Institute this month: Alessandra Mezzadri (@FeministOnMarx), Gábor Egry (@glegry) & Katharyne Mitchell Their projects explore how capitalism and empires shape labor and space - from debt-driven exploitation in global supply chains to the influences of Austria-Hungary on the economic space in South-Eastern Europe and the layered history of Tempelhof Field in Berlin. Learn more about their research projects on our website: iwm.at/news/new-fellows-join…

It is ironic and liberating that after these guys, whose only brief encounter with Hungary was a visit to the Danube Inst bubble, lectured us for so many years what is really going on in our country, we can finally simply retort: you have no idea about this country.

The funniest aspect of how intensely and emotionally the fate of the Budapest-based post-liberals is debated here is how invisible these guys were in the broader Hungarian landscape. Only this post-mortem discussion makes clear how significant they thought to be.

What tells a lot about the state of the world is not US politicians pressuring the Vatican replicating the old anecdote about Stalin and the Vatican but the fact that US IR academia and the think-tank world consider Elbridge Colby a genius.
Replying to @ChristopherHale
In January, behind closed doors at the Pentagon, Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre — Pope Leo XIV’s then-ambassador to the United States — and delivered a lecture. America, Colby and his colleagues told the cardinal, has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world. The Catholic Church had better take its side. As tempers rose, one U.S. official reached for a fourteenth-century weapon and invoked the Avignon Papacy, the period when the French Crown used military force to bend the bishop of Rome to its will. That scene, broken this week by Mattia Ferraresi in an extraordinary piece of journalism for The Free Press, may be the most remarkable moment in the long and knotted history of the American republic’s relationship with the Catholic Church. substack.com/home/post/p-193…

No, DOGE, ChatGPT and the Trump Administration would never condone antisemitism! Unintelligence. "A documentary about Jewish women’s slave labor during the Holocaust? The focus on gender risked “contributing to D.E.I. by amplifying marginalized voices.” nytimes.com/2026/03/07/arts/…

So, Isreal announces that someone they had announced of having killed is the new supreme leader. And it is just tweeted out uncritically. Dementia is the new Covid?
which is very bad news

Tragic farce or farcical tragedy: - I'm the most powerful man on earth, the greatest president of all times. The peacemaker and dealmaker. - Wait, what do you say, Bibi tells I should attack Iran? Oh, how can I resist?

Even if there was no classic agreement, it was clear that there is something the Russians understand as such, but everyone took it as Russian obfuscation. The best case is that the "cowboy diplomats" were trapped by theold-style institutional bureaucratic Russian diplomacy,

which adds a nice twist to those recent articles that praised the "cowboys" as the out of the box people who can finally do something to unlock seemingly irresolvable deadlocks. Now we have "Anchorage formula" and "3 million cities to build in 3 years" left from this stupidity.

I respectfully disagree. In a veiled diplomatic language it was reported that time, Russians consistently referred to it since as an agreemet and the Kushner-Witkoff duo drafted an agreement along this line that the US they tried to push down Ukriane's throat.
This contradicts every other report about Alaska, including direct statements from Vance and Rubio. Moreover, it’s inconsistent with how the meeting ended and what transpired afterwards. I am fairly confident that the Kremlin is lying about this to create confusion and momentum for concessions by Ukraine. It’s total nonsense too because Trump can’t possibly concede this anyway no matter how much he might want to.

TACO. Or a stockexchangely constrained hybrid regime.

The bright side: Maduro's "arrest" abroad makes any argument in the birtright citizenship case that "illegal aliens" (people violating US law) within the US are subject to its jurisdiction or not moot. One would even risk claiming: it asserts that everyone in the world is.

This is the European elite. The Professor in Tübingen and at Hertie School does not even recognize that for some reason the US, despite that statistically staggering growth difference to Germany, elected Trump. So, where is the causality he wants to octroy on Europe?

Many people overlook Orbán's role in the peace deal drama and focus entirely on Witkoff et al. Trump televised a scene from Orbán's visit, Orbán telling Russia is invincible. And now, when suddenly everyhing is wobbly, Orbán unexpectedly visits Moscow on Friday.
