“Slava Ukraini!” — that is how President Zelenskyy ended his speech at Babyn Yar today. And I find that deeply disturbing. To put it mildly, it was profoundly inappropriate. Worse. It was an insult to the memory of Jews who were murdered in the Shoah, in which Ukrainian nationalists also participated. The OUN adopted “Glory to Ukraine” as an official greeting. The same OUN collaborated with Nazi Germany in 1941, during the wave of anti-Jewish violence that swept through western Ukraine. Jakub Berman, a Jewish survivor of the Lviv pogrom, recalled what happened at the hands of Ukrainian militiamen: “Some militiamen forced Jews to make the fascist salute and repeat ‘Glory to Ukraine!’ to humiliate them.” At the time, many OUN members served in the Ukrainian militia. Words have histories. Symbols carry memories. Context matters. To stand at Babyn Yar, on the anniversary of one of the largest Nazi massacres of the Holocaust, and end a commemorative speech with “Glory to Ukraine” is not merely historically tone-deaf. It is an affront to the memory of Holocaust victims. Babyn Yar is a place where remembrance should come before nationalist slogans, stained with Jewish blood.
