Google contractors wanted to go on strike, AWU offered strike fund, they were all set to start tomorrow, within hours of letting management know, management backed down. To "organize big tech" we only need relatively small # of workers to be in the union to have a huge impact.

i find it useful to look at this justification as well since the cost of living-based justification is crafted to cause cracks in solidarity (and breaks down quickly when you look at the actual numbers), so it's nice to contextualize it

there's some smoke and mirrors when you talk about market pay, too, since the companies *are* the market and it's all a game of numberwang (exploitation edition)

this is a good thread that talks about how the "cost of living based pay" isn't real (or good).
it's also worth mentioning that another common justification in this space is "market based pay"
and that's an even more direct statement of "we pay you what we can get away with"

periodic reminder that location-based pay has always been (and is even more now in the modern remote work era) a legal form of wage theft
