As I have said, and again, do not use this word lightly, Volodymyr Ishchenko is a pro-Russian traitor who defends fascist Russians and attacks leftist Ukrainians. His entire activism is dedicated to the destruction of Ukraine as a sovereign independent nation.
This guy was outraged about a propagandist who got his visa revoked, but when someone he doesn’t like gets viciously assaulted by neo-Nazis, he finds ways to denigrate the victim. And it’s pretty rich for him to be sneering at the specifics of anyone else’s service in any case

A small request to foreign journalists working in Ukraine: ask the Lviv City Council and the Holos party why their former council member led a group of men in attacking a 24-year-old guy who just wanted to give a lecture Without pressure, this case will be swept under the rug
My friend Vlad Starodubtsev, a Ukrainian veteran and historian, was beaten up in Lviv today by a group of far-right thugs for trying to give a history lecture. According to Social Movement, a Ukrainian democratic socialist organization, about 20 of them attacked him in broad daylight, just before the talk was supposed to start at the group's office near Lviv University. The lecture was on the history of the labor and socialist movement in Galicia. This is an attack on the freedom of speech that journalists, academics and activists depend on. It's vital that attention be drawn to this issue so that authorities take appropriate action. If you are journalist reading this, please consider covering it, and following up with authorities. Does this really reflect well on Taiwan? Deporting Chinese students over videos that could have been meant in jest? It's good to see that some, including in the DPP, view it as overstepping bounds, but even so focustaiwan.tw/politics/2026…

I beg you haven't heard of Feng Rui, a young labor activist in China jailed since last month (& info on him all censored on the Chinese internet) simply b/c he had been documenting workers' plights. Yep, this is how Chinese govt enjoys "public trust" & secures "economic freedom"
I want to invite people into a thought experiment, one that I suspect many will find insane. The thought experiment: China is more democratic than the US. Numerous *Western* surveys have now found that the Chinese government enjoys more public support than the US government. On the question of legitimacy, China fares better. China also does better at securing basic economic freedoms and meeting the material needs of its poor. What's the point of the ballot box when politics becomes performative and politicians aren't held accountable when they fail to deliver universal housing, healthcare, or education? I suspect a big part of the explanation for the Chinese government's commitment to public service is that top-level politicians in China need a proven track record in the domain of public service delivery. The Chinese political system is highly meritocratic, unlike the American one. Becoming a top-level politician in the CPC requires decades of bureaucratic progression. Of course, China isn't more democratic than the US on every measure. The US has a free press and open competition for political power, although both of these are highly influenced by corporate interests. While I am not convinced there's a clear answer to this thought experiment, dismissing China as a tyrannical dictatorship is ignorant. There are examples of failed authoritarian states around the world (I've lived in one), and China is not one of them.

How much has China subverted human rights? Well, Navi Pillay just got the Nobel Peace Prize. The same Navi Pillay who was High Commissioner when I first reported the UN handing names of dissidents to China. Her response? Bring her a different chair, she was uncomfortable.

Navi Pillay, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Below are emails sent to China during her tenure, giving advance info on who would speak out about China's human rights abuses. Pillay declined to attend the award to Liu Xiaobo.

UN whistleblower Emma Reilly today accused Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay of being “complicit in the Uyghur genocide,” alleging she oversaw the UN handing dissidents’ names to China and ignored warnings about the danger to them and their families. unwatch.org/complicit-in-gen…

Fifty years later, the Thammasat University massacre remains one of Thailand’s deepest political fault lines and one of its most gaping wounds. The echoes of that darkest chapter in modern Thai history still ring today: in the impunity for state-sanctioned violence, but also in the defiant spirit of dissent against dictatorship - military or otherwise - and the recurring hope for reform. #6ตุลา

In Soviet Ukraine there was a nationalist term for the ‘smurfification’ of Ukrainian culture; ‘Sharovarshchyna’ - used to critique the USSR’s reduction of their culture within the Soviet system into cossack kitsch and silly smurf folk dances as a substitute for authentic culture
China has perfected the art of the ‘Smurf Minority’. More Smurf ethnicities in traditional Smurf costumes living in Smurf villages and doing silly Smurf dances than any other country on the planet. The ‘Smurfification’ of peripheral groups, redefined to their Smurf-like features

This is the settler colonialism that you will never hear western leftists talk about
🏚 Apartment seizures continue in Mariupol The scheme is brutally simple: properties are simply reassigned to new owners in the registry. Then the new “owner” shows up and tells the lawful residents that their Ukrainian documents no longer mean anything.
