20 years ago, I was studying abroad at the @UnivofGh. Like spaceflight, it was a positive, life-changing, perspective-deepening experience. Seeing the beauty of Ghana from space reminds me of the amazing people I met there and how in exploring the world, we learn about ourselves.
Congrats 🎉🍾 @garyalsmith .. keep going🫶🏽
Chale some news:

Suspension, okay. But @GhPoliceService pls listen to his comments and look into his assertions about rape and people who have done it!
And this is how sexual predatory slips away without proper investigation and is perpetuated... by all means investigations should be evidence-led but it shouldn’t rely on the victims and their families! The state should aggressively pursue!
This matter… even more interesting if you live outside your home country..🙂 we should do a small research on it Gary
Yes, the name thing is real, @asemota.
Narrated this story before: before my face became popular, my name got me into rooms where they assumed i was a (middle-aged) white man.
Around 2008, I was very close to changing my first names to my Ghanaian names. This was shortly after Ghana@50, when a surge of nationalism was sweeping through the country and names like Adom, Nhyira, Dromo, Dzormo, etc were becoming popular and lots of folks were switching to their local names.
The owner of the station where I did my national service suggested to me that because I was looking at an international journalism career, it was best if I kept all my English names. I thought it was nonsense, because I didnt why/what my name had to do with anything if my work was good. And I knew my work was good.
After interesting back and forth within the family, we decided to follow his advice. (RIP, Big Jay 🙏🏿)
And, boy, was he right.
The next 3-4 years were crucial. When the explosion of Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Tumbler, Blogger meant the major international media needed social-media digital ninjas to populate their new media, I was ready.
However... I consistently had several editors of international publications admitting they initially thought I was some white dude. The implication was not lost on me; I knew what they meant.
Because I made my name as a writer long before radio/TV, the credibility made transitioning easy, so I did not have trouble being accepted on international TV and radio.
But I have often wondered if they'd have taken a chance on my work had they met me with all my Ghanaian names in the beginning...
You made a huge impact on journalism @amanpour and on my own journalism. Deep admiration 🥰🥰. I hope life is kind to you in your future endeavors.

He wasn’t sent to prison because of a lenient plea deal offered by then-Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price.
In 2023, after Price took office on a platform of reducing incarceration, her office offered a deal that dropped the attempted-murder charge and one poisoning count. Xu pleaded no contest to a single felony poisoning count.
A probation officer’s recommendation treating it as a first offense, noting Xu was highly educated, employed, and living with his wife and children, and expressing hope he would use a “second chance.”
The victim eventually stopping her opposition to the plea (described as worn down by the process). A defense toxicologist’s report disputing long-term health effects, which limited restitution to about $7,000 instead of the nearly $500,000 sought.
Price was later recalled by voters, in part over criticisms of her lenient plea deals
Wow!
A Berkeley chemical engineer who suffered years of unexplained illness discovered through a spy camera from Amazon that her coworker, David Xu, was poisoning her food and water with cadmium, a toxic heavy metal for nearly 18 months between 2017 and 2019. The victim experienced significant health problems and at times required emergency care at a hospital. Newly released video shows Xu appearing to put a substance in her water bottle in 2019.
Xu was arrested that year and charged with attempted murder and two counts of poisoning, offenses that could have sent him to prison for life. But under a plea deal, the attempted murder charge and one poisoning count were dropped. Xu pleaded no contest to one felony poisoning charge and received two years of probation, with credit for one day served. He completed probation in March and is now seeking to have his felony conviction dismissed.
