Seattle and Vancouver are both suffering this week. At least Vancouver's #EmptyHomeTax gave it $50M+ to invest in emergency housing, helping more low-income families survive weather emergencies like this — while keeping commutes manageable for locals. #NoMoreGhostHomes
Seattle has 15,000 empty homes. Matching Vancouver's Empty Home Tax of 1% assessed value, and assuming assessed values match Zillow's data here, that's a whopping $111,000,000 per YEAR revenue stream.

This podcast is illuminating. The CEO of @tollbrothers describes how a decade of undersupply + millennials scrambling to buy homes has resulted in enormous profits for those who own/build homes (and pain for those who are renters or looking to buy). Time for an #EmptyHomesTax.
What will the housing market bring in 2022? Terry Hagerty, our Co-head of Homebuilding and Building Products, explains how the boom in housing is fueling strategic activity. click.gs.com/g37k

Following @billtrotter's lead in noting how too many little-used vacation homes in @VisitBarHarbor hurt @jacksonlab's ability to recruit and retain its scientists. Maine suffers — but so do all patients who'd otherwise benefit from impeded JAX research. nomoreghosthomes.com/2021/12…

Boise's median home price has increased 46% in a year, at the same time Idaho has a greater share of empty second homes than the vast majority of other Western states. If CA, CO and ID adopted the #EmptyHomesTax, more Idahoans could afford a starter home. nomoreghosthomes.com/2021/11…

Would love to hear the perspective of @mlcarmel and other Idaho experts from @BoiseDev, @TheIdahoPress — and elsewhere — on the political viability of a B.C.-style tax on out-of-state millionaires' empty homes to invest in livability for Idahoans. ⬇️ xitter.cf/progresstoronto/status…
Vancouver’s vacant homes tax is so successful they increased it to 3%! Since 2017 it has: ➡️ Decreased vacant units by 25% ➡️ Created $61.3M for affordable housing Take action to tell Mayor Tory & City Councillors to support a Toronto Vacant Homes Tax: progresstoronto.ca/vacant-ho…

How are some cities using their "first tranche of COVID relief money from the American Rescue Plan"? "Palm Beach Gardens, Florida — in Palm Beach County, home to 160 golf courses — is building a new golf course." Paging @pushtheneedle. khn.org/news/article/from-se…
What if we took a 160 acre golf course and repurposed it for housing and saved 95% of all the trees? Now you have 40,000 people living on two future light rail stops with a wonderful tree-lined dense walkable neighborhood

Astounding graph from @business on China's housing bubble. Given the misery costly housing causes in NY and SF — near the bottom here — the stress it causes working people in China, Mumbai, Delhi, São Paulo, and Lagos is hard to imagine.

I think there’s a lot to this. Why is childcare so expensive? To a significant extent, bad housing policy. Why is inequality rising? To a significant extent, bad housing policy. Repeat… worksinprogress.co/issue/the…

Ken Griffin has hoovered up $1 billion of vanity, post-divorce real estate in London, New York, and Florida. Time for an #EmptyHomesTax. nomoreghosthomes.com/2021/09…
"British Columbia’s high temperature record this summer overtook that of Las Vegas. So mitigating climate change by rapidly cutting greenhouse gases becomes not just a good idea but a survival necessity." Let's stop churning out GHGs to construct and maintain empty second homes.

The Biltmore is a prime example of wasteful vacation home-building, built at a time of deep poverty in #Appalachia. Today's vanity homes may not match the @BiltmoreEstate's size—but they still waste America's precious resources. Build modern 🏥🏫 instead. nomoreghosthomes.com/2021/08…

Much like the European palaces the Vanderbilt family (who still own the property) continue to pine after, the @BiltmoreEstate was an expression of callous wealth — at a time when many of Vanderbilt's fellow Americans faced starvation and miserable poverty. xitter.cf/BiltmoreEstate/status/…
Nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, #Biltmore was the vision of George W. Vanderbilt. The privately-owned, 250-room French Renaissance château is America’s Largest Home surrounded by 8,000-acres. #PalaceDay @Palace_Day

California's de facto affordable housing policy is to exile our working and middle class families out to the desert while reserving our temperate, high-opportunity coastal cities for the super wealthy. It's unethical on so many levels. – at Salt Lake City, UT

Taking it a step further: last year, Toronto brought in a vacant property tax. This is a penalty applied to properties that sit dormant for a year or more. There’s no reason not to do this in St. John’s, too. It’s not fair to our community to be complacent about this issue. /8

Oldie-but-goodie, from two years ago this week. Congratulations to the @cityoftoronto in beating many U.S. cities to the punch in adopting @CityofVancouver's #EmptyHomesTax this year. cc @anabailaoTO @EmptyHomeTax @progresstoronto
