On December 30, 1952, London bus driver Albert Gunter dramatically jumped his Route 78 double-decker bus across a rising gap on Tower Bridge. Realizing the bridge was lifting unexpectedly on a green light, the former WWII tank driver accelerated, clearing the opening with 20 passengers on board.... With 20 terrified passengers on board, the red Routemaster leaped across a three-foot gap as the bridge continued to lift. The front wheels landed safely on the opposite side, though the impact broke the suspension and injured Gunter’s leg. Miraculously, everyone survived with only minor injuries. Albert was later rewarded with a £10 bonus for his bravery — roughly £400 today — and became a London legend. His daring leap remains one of the most extraordinary moments in public transport history. #drthehistories

The image attached here is a fabricated/AI-generated depiction that greatly exaggerates the 1952 event; no real photo of the bus jump exists and the actual gap was only about 3 feet. leadstories.com/hoax-alert/202… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Towe… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

This beautiful former radio station building in Guatemala from 1935, designed by architect Wilhelm Krebs, somehow strongly reminds me of a giant whale! I love its blue Art Deco facade, curved corners, and these glass block details.

Dolly was next to me at the microphone, and we were reminiscing about when we made Islands in the Stream, among other memories. She suddenly turned to me and said, “Where we are standing right now is where I wrote Jolene, and I Will Always Love You.”

The Hidden Design Genius Behind Japan’s Most Trusted Delivery Logo. Japanese designer Kenya Hara, through Nippon Design Center, led the 2021 refinement of Yamato Transport’s iconic Kuroneko mark, the first redesign of the symbol in 64 years. The story, however, begins in 1957, when Yamato founder Yasuomi Ogura was inspired by the mother-and-kitten emblem of American transport company Allied Van Lines, whose idea of “careful handling” resonated with Yamato’s approach to delivery. Ogura obtained permission to use the concept, and Yamato’s own mark was designed by Takeshi Shimizu, who worked in the company’s public relations department. There is an especially charming detail behind its creation: Shimizu’s young daughter drew the family’s black cat, Kuro, on a sheet of paper using crayons. Her drawing of the mother cat and kittens became an important inspiration for the final symbol. Remarkably, in 2016 another cat drawing was discovered on the back of the same sheet, showing a kitten positioned at its mother’s mouth, an image even closer to the eventual logo. In 2021, Hara refined the symbol without changing its essential character, carefully examining details such as the eyes and ears and replacing the traditional outlined oval with a softer, more expansive ellipse. The result modernised a 64-year-old symbol while preserving its enduring message of care, reassurance and trust. #logodecks
