Middle Eastern tanker rates have entered a PARABOLIC phase, with freight costs surging to unprecedented levels across the crude market: The benchmark Saudi Arabia-China VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) route EXPLODED to a record $1.33 million per day, roughly 21x its level a year ago. At the same time, Middle Eastern tanker rates to China, India and Japan are near $0.87-$0.97 million per day. The surge is no longer limited to VLCCs, with Suezmax tanker rates, covering ships that typically carry ~1 million barrels of crude, more than DOUBLING in just 3 trading days to $568K-$801K per day, while every Baltic Suezmax index hit an all-time high. The main driver is the growing complexity of moving Gulf crude, as ship-to-ship transfers, 7-10 day waiting times, and longer routes are tying up available tanker capacity and pushing more vessels toward the Middle East and Asia. Record tanker rates are making crude significantly more expensive to deliver, creating upward pressure on fuel costs and adding to inflation. Moving each barrel is becoming dramatically more expensive across the global market.
