Follow the smoke.
An average petrol car burns around 17,000 litres of fuel over its lifetime.
That’s 17,000 litres of something that has to be extracted from the ground, transported, refined, distributed and eventually burned.
And yet, every time someone wants to convince you that electric cars are bad for the environment, where do they point?
A lithium mine?
Cobalt mining?
They’ll show you pictures of scarred landscapes, enormous mining equipment and mountains of displaced earth.
They’ll tell you about the environmental damage caused by extracting lithium, nickel and cobalt.
And they’re right about one thing.
Mining has an environmental impact and nobody should pretend otherwise.
They’ll happily show you a lithium mine, but strangely enough, they never show you the oil wells.
They never show you the drilling rigs, the leaking pipelines, the gas flaring, the oil tankers crossing oceans or the refineries operating around the clock.
They never mention the energy required to extract crude oil from beneath the ground, transport it thousands of miles, turn it into petrol and deliver it to your local filling station.
And all of that happens before you’ve driven a single mile.
The materials required to manufacture an electric vehicle battery are largely extracted once.
Those materials can remain in the battery for hundreds of thousands of miles, and valuable metals can eventually be recovered and recycled.
An ICE vehicle needs a continuous supply of freshly extracted fossil fuels for its entire working life.
And when that petrol disappears through the exhaust, it doesn’t magically vanish.
It becomes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, benzene and other emissions.
Burning just one litre of petrol produces approximately 2.3 kilograms of CO2 at the exhaust.
Multiply that by 17,000 litres.
That’s approximately 39 TONNES OF CO2.
And that’s just the exhaust emissions.
It doesn’t include extracting the oil, transporting it, refining it or delivering the petrol.
Meanwhile, the battery materials in an electric car are still physically there, ready to be recovered and used again.
That’s the difference between an energy system built around continuously burning resources and one increasingly capable of reusing them.
Lifecycle studies consistently find that electric cars produce substantially fewer greenhouse gas emissions than comparable petrol cars, even after accounting for battery manufacturing and electricity generation.
In fact, the International Council on Clean Transportation estimated in 2025 that battery electric cars sold in the European Union produce approximately 73% fewer lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than comparable petrol cars.
That’s not 73% less pollution from the exhaust.
That’s across the vehicle’s entire lifecycle, including manufacturing, energy production and driving.
Of course, electric vehicles aren’t environmentally perfect.
But nobody needs to pretend electric cars are perfect to demonstrate that they’re significantly cleaner.
They just need to compare the whole picture.
Where are the pictures of the oil industry?
Where are the drilling rigs?
Where are the refineries?
Where are the tankers?

Elon has made massive political mistakes and now pays the price.
I've said many times that he should stop all political activities and attempts to influence policy be it national or internationally and focus on his companies, which undoubtedly offer great products and services.
Elon Musk is a genius as an entrepreneur and inventor, but he has never understood history or the basics of politics and has caused massive damage through his interference and actions.
SpaceX is already suffering badly as a result.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means:
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests.
Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election.
Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk.
Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.

If we only use AI to make the things that we already make, just faster, then we're definitely missing out on the most interesting part.
From my talk at @lennysan’s Summit, here are four ideas for raising the ceiling, not just the floor:
- Have a point of view [5:38]
- Encode your standards into the machine [9:07]
- Don't confuse done with good [12:21]
- Unleash creativity and artistry [16:19]

Text version of a similar counter for Elon Musk, based on his public X posts: It has been 587 days since he last referenced challenging Putin to combat (March 9 2025). It has been 2 days since he said "Time for Zelensky to go" (Oct 15 2026).

The day before… maybe the months before. When someone builds a mountain, don’t back down. Climb it, and see what happens. What the SpaceX and Tesla teams did tonight shows what throwing doubt to the wind and ego aside can do. Thanks to everyone in the fold, you are all amazing and we stand taller together. Much love team - you know I got your back.

It's so tiresome watching people who’ve spent decades in design mock those who still care enough about their craft to do things with their own hands, at their own pace, and on their own terms.
I couldn't give a damn whether they use AI. What I find utterly tasteless is the smugness and borderline contempt toward anyone who still finds meaning in the process rather than merely the output.
What I can't wrap my head around is how someone spends twenty years cultivating a craft only to arrive at a place where efficiency is all that matters to you, and you ridicule others for taking pride in the work itself. Where is the integrity, the passion, the creative spirit?

Everyone who says "why don't the AI companies work on things that are actually good for humanity?" - well, this is the sort of thing we *were* working on before ChatGPT came out and everyone dropped everything to compete with that instead.

It picked up some appreciable signal on September 23, locked in on the exact landfall location4 days before it happened, and nailed the peak intensity consistently 3 days before it happened. A new age of forecasting is upon us.
