We're wrapping up another Force Science Certification Course this week, where participants had the opportunity to learn firsthand from Dr. William Lewinski, Dr. William Bozeman, Brian Baxter, Craig Allen, and Michael Musengo. From human performance science to decision-making during critical incidents, our instructors delivered masterclass-style presentations exploring a wide range of topics, all centered on one common goal: better understanding the human performance factors that influence law enforcement actions and decision-making. A special thank you to everyone who traveled from near and far to join us in Chicago this week. We sincerely appreciate your commitment to learning, sharing experiences, and, most importantly, advancing the profession through evidence-based science.

Now that's a picture full of law enforcement history, experience, and some conversations worth listening in on! A little downtime during our Force Science Certification Course in the Greater Chicago area brought together Charles Remsberg, Dr. William Lewinski, Brian Baxter, and Craig Allen — four individuals who have made significant contributions to law enforcement training, education, and the advancement of the profession. A special acknowledgment to Charles Remsberg, a longtime contributor to Force Science News, co-founder of the original Street Survival Seminar and Street Survival Newsline, and author of three best-selling law enforcement training textbooks. His decades of work have helped shape how generations of officers learn, train, and prepare for the realities of the profession. A great reminder that some of the most valuable conversations happen outside the classroom.

Closing out the week in Kansas City, where our latest Force Science Certification Course brought together law enforcement professionals from across the region to explore the science behind human performance and decision-making in high-stakes situations! Our expert instructional team, including Brian Baxter and Michael Musengo, guided participants through topics such as attention and perception, decision-making, memory, action/reaction time, and other critical factors that influence officer performance during complex force encounters. More importantly, participants gained research-informed insights and practical knowledge to take back to their agencies, helping bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world applications. A big thank you to everyone who joined us this week, and a special thanks to the @LenexaPolice for their hospitality and for providing such an outstanding training venue - until next time, Kansas City!

Force Science’s Michael Musengo could be found in Columbus, Ohio, this week delivering our Advanced Instructional Methods (AIM) course! While many training programs focus heavily on delivering content for participants to study, retain, and hopefully apply, AIM takes a different approach. This hybrid course turns the science of learning into practical, research-informed strategies instructors can apply in the classroom and during skills-based training. Throughout the course, participants are challenged to rethink common myths about learning and skill retention while exploring methods designed to strengthen retention, recall, and real-world application. Many thanks to the @ColumbusPolice for hosting us this week and helping bring this timely training to law enforcement instructors throughout the region! Interested in bringing a more research-informed approach to your training? Learn more about AIM and upcoming training opportunities here: forcescience.com/training/ad…

A critical incident inside a Houston hospital raises questions about crisis, threat assessment, de-escalation and the realities of human performance. As this incident reminds us, police officers are not the only professionals who must balance human performance limitations with the responsibility to manage dangerous, rapidly evolving emergencies. What happens when communication and less-lethal efforts fail, threats escalate, and the time available to make a decision suddenly disappears? In our latest Force Science News article, we examine the Memorial City incident not to rush toward conclusions, but to explore what it can teach us about thought, emotion, behavior, and the decisions humans must make when uncertainty, consequence, and time collide. Force Science Founding Partner Dr. William Lewinski could be found in Salt Lake City this week, providing the closing remarks for our latest Force Science Certification Course! After a week packed with research, discussion, and a massive amount of information, Dr. Lewinski helped bring it all together around a central principle: the human component matters. Whether we’re talking about training, investigations, courtroom proceedings, policy, or the realities of daily law enforcement duties, human performance factors must always be part of the equation. Understanding how people perceive, process, decide, react, and remember under complex and rapidly evolving conditions provides important context for understanding performance. A truly fitting way to close out another week of Force Science training and, more importantly, sending participants home with a framework they can continue applying throughout their careers. A special thank you to our friends at the @SLCO_Sheriff 's Office for providing the space and support to help make this week a true learning success. We look forward to returning for more critical training in the future!
