#California is taking action to strengthen early math instruction. A new law will require schools to screen K-2 students for math challenges and provide evidence-based support before students fall behind. Early identification + targeted intervention can help more students build a strong foundation for future learning. kpbs.org/news/education/2026…
SB 1067, sponsored by EdVoice and authored by Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson, has been signed by the Governor and KPBS is highlighting how the new law will help identify K-2 students who need additional support and connect them with evidence-based interventions.
Our CEO Marshall Tuck shared why early identification matters and how SB 1067 can help make math a bigger priority in California schools. 📚
📺 Thank you, KPBS, for highlighting our organization and bringing this important conversation to more families and educators!

Most #California 8th graders are not meeting grade-level math standards, and new EdSource data shows the majority do not catch up before graduation. In 2024-25, more than 66% of 8th graders fell short, and students who miss foundational math skills early are less likely to take the courses they need for high school and college. Strong, early math support gives every student a fair shot.

"The research behind early assessment and targeted intervention is clear, and the need is urgent. Twenty states have already incorporated early math assessments into their academic improvement strategies and are beginning to see results. Some California schools have already incorporated K-2 math assessments into their instructional practices, but access depends largely on where a child attends school."

Data science starts with math. A recent survey found that parents and educators ranked strong foundations in core academic subjects, including math, ahead of coding and prompting tools when asked what skills matter most for students' future success.
Students need strong mathematical knowledge and skills to make sense of data, identify patterns and draw conclusions. Foundational math is the gateway to deeper data science learning.
