📊 California’s latest test scores show progress, but far too many students are still being left behind. In a new article, EdSource highlighted California's early literacy reforms and why it's too soon to see their full impact. While the state has made important investments in evidence-based reading instruction and early screening, meaningful results take time and require sustained commitment to implementation. California must keep education a top priority and continue advancing policies that give every student, especially those from low-income communities, the support and opportunities they need to succeed. 📚 🔗 Read the full article: edsource.org/2026/california…

📚 California is making progress, but we must do more. EdVoice CEO Marshall Tuck shares why the latest reading and math results from California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) are both encouraging and a call to action. While progress is worth recognizing, significant achievement gaps persist for students from low-income communities, limiting their future opportunities. And every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. edvoice.org/news/statement-f…

October is #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth, a perfect time to celebrate California's second year of reading screener implementation. In 2023, EdVoice and our partners at Decoding Dyslexia CA co-sponsored the bill requiring all public schools to identify K-2 students at risk for dyslexia and other reading difficulties, and connect them with timely, evidence-based interventions. Last year, 1.2 million children were screened for the first time, and we are very excited to see this progress continue in year 2. 💙 Reading is critical for all future knowledge and opportunity. Every child deserves access to the support they need to build strong reading foundations.✨

Thank you, Governor Newsom, for signing SB 1067 into law and taking a historic step toward ensuring all California students get the math support they need. SB 1067 will bring annual early math assessments to K-2 students, helping teachers identify learning gaps sooner and connect students with evidence-based interventions before students fall further behind. This is a major win for California students, teachers, and families, and a powerful investment in building strong math foundations for every child. 🎉 Thank you to Senator Weber Pierson for her leadership on this issue, as well as the legislative champions, educators, advocates, and coalition partners who helped make this possible. Now, let’s get to work on implementation! 💪 #SB1067

📚 As California moves forward with the implementation of AB 1454, a bill requiring the use of evidence-based ELA/ELD instructional materials in K-8 classrooms, state leaders must provide clear, comparable information to understand the strengths and limitations of the materials under consideration. The current designation does not tell educators which programs are strongest or how they compare. Tomorrow, EdVoice Institute and their coalition partners will provide testimony at the Instructional Quality Commission meeting, advocating for greater transparency and clearer information about instructional quality on behalf of all California students. Because California students deserve instructional materials that give them the strongest possible foundation for literacy. Read the full letter: lnkd.in/eQb-SNei 🔗

💰 EdVoice advocated for the 2025 Budget Act allocation of $200 million to support TK-5 professional development (PD) in evidence-based literacy instruction. 📖 As implementation gets underway, a new @EdSource article highlights concerns raised by EdVoice and other early literacy advocates about the California Department of Education's extensive list of 37 recommended PD programs, which are to be approved by the State Board of Education in tomorrow's board meeting. ⚠️ There must be a stronger quality bar and clearer guidance for local education agencies when choosing a PD program for their educators. 🎯 📰 Read the full story: edsource.org/2026/teachers-t…
